The deal carries a $17 million average annual value and covers the 2026-27 through 2033-34 seasons. The NHL Players’ Association called it the richest deal in NHL history when it was announced; that signing-date description does not establish its all-time ranking as of October 8, 2026.
What are the terms of Kaprizov’s contract?
Minnesota announced the extension on September 30, 2025. It is an eight-year deal worth $136 million in total, with an average annual value (AAV) of $17 million. The contract begins in 2026-27 and runs through 2033-34, so it does not replace his contract for the 2025-26 season.
| Term | Details |
|---|---|
| Total value | $136 million |
| Length | Eight years |
| Average annual value | $17 million |
| Seasons covered | 2026-27 through 2033-34 |
| Announcement date | September 30, 2025 |
These are the terms reported in the Minnesota Wild’s announcement. AAV is the contract’s average annual value; it is not a statement that Kaprizov receives the same cash payment every year.
Was it the richest contract in NHL history?
At the time of signing, yes: the NHLPA described the extension as “the richest deal in NHL history.” That claim is anchored to its September 30, 2025 announcement. The available information does not establish whether it remained the league’s highest total-value contract by October 8, 2026.

“Richest” usually refers to total contract value, while “highest annual value” refers to the average per season. They are different comparisons: a longer contract can have a larger total even with a lower AAV. The NHLPA’s announcement supports the record description at signing, but a current ranking would require comparing league contracts through the date in question.
Why did Minnesota move before free agency?
NHL.com reported that Kaprizov could have become an unrestricted free agent after the 2025-26 season. By extending him before that point, Minnesota secured his services for eight additional seasons beginning in 2026-27. General manager Bill Guerin told NHL.com, “Great players want to play with great players.”

The extension gives the Wild a long-term commitment around a leading scorer, but the contract’s AAV is also a substantial roster-planning obligation. It does not, on its own, reveal how the club will allocate cap space or which future roster decisions it will make. AP quoted Columbus general manager Don Waddell describing a broader trend toward teams retaining their players: “I think going forward you’re going to see less free agency. You’re going to see teams locking up their own players if they can.”
