TechCrunch Disrupt 2024’s clearest signal was not that AI had won every category. It was that promising startups needed to connect technical novelty to a specific problem, buyer and path to adoption. That contrast showed up in the Startup Battlefield: portable breast-cancer screening company Salva Health won, while bio-inspired materials startup GeCKo Materials was runner-up. The results offer a useful snapshot of what one curated startup event rewarded—not proof of which technologies or companies will succeed across the market.

What TechCrunch Disrupt 2024 was—and what it can tell us

The event ran October 28–30, 2024, at Moscone West in San Francisco. Its six stages—Disrupt, AI, Builders, Fintech, SaaS and Space—sat alongside an Expo Hall, demonstrations, networking and the Startup Battlefield 200. The program mixed startup pitches with conversations about technology and company-building; it was part showcase, part conference and part competition, rather than a neutral survey of the industry. TechCrunch’s event information and agenda document its format.

That distinction matters when reading the event as a forecast. The agenda and finalists show what TechCrunch chose to spotlight in late 2024. They do not measure how common a technology was across startups, establish that judges represented all investors, or demonstrate that a featured company later found product-market fit.

AI was a layer across products, not just a stage

AI had its own stage, but it also appeared in conversations about knowledge-worker tools, data infrastructure, security, consumer products and startup operations. Day-one programming included AI tools for knowledge workers and data transformation; day three included discussion of AI innovation alongside product-market fit and go-to-market strategy. Day one’s program, day three’s coverage and the agenda show AI’s reach across the event.

The more durable question for an AI company was therefore not simply which model it used. Founders needed to explain what workflow they improved, what data or domain expertise made the product distinctive, how customers would find and pay for it, and what made its outputs trustworthy. A polished interface over a general-purpose model may be easy to copy; a product embedded in a valuable workflow, with reliable data and a workable route to customers, has a stronger case to make.

That is a business test, not a conclusion that AI ventures were inherently better investments. The prominence of AI partly reflected the event’s programming choices, and conference attention cannot establish returns or future market share.

Battlefield results favored legible, concrete problems

TechCrunch selected 200 early-stage companies for the Startup Battlefield 200, then narrowed the group to 20 finalists and a final five. The five were GeCKo Materials, Luna, MabLab, Salva Health and Stitch3D. Salva Health won the competition and its $100,000 equity-free prize; GeCKo Materials was runner-up. These results describe a judged pitch competition, not a finding that the winning company had proven commercial or clinical success. Finalist What TechCrunch reported it was building Why it made a useful case study
Salva Health A portable breast-cancer detection device intended to help address limited access to mammography. A high-stakes health problem with a clear access rationale, alongside demanding clinical and distribution questions.
GeCKo Materials A reusable, residue-free, bio-inspired dry adhesive for uses including robotics and industrial automation. A materials-science product whose physical behavior could be shown in a live demonstration.
MabLab Testing strips intended to detect five common dangerous adulterants in recreational drugs within minutes. A focused safety use case where accuracy and clear limits matter.
Stitch3D A browser-based platform to view, share, annotate and manage large 3D point-cloud files. A specialized software workflow for working with large technical data.
Luna A health and well-being app for teen girls, combining expert answers with tracking for periods, moods and skin. A consumer health product serving a defined audience and sensitive information needs.

Descriptions of the finalists come from TechCrunch’s finalist coverage; the GeCKo Materials description is also covered in its finalist video. The result supports a limited but useful interpretation: judges gave the top award to a pitch centered on a concrete, consequential need, while also recognizing a technically distinctive materials product. It does not establish a universal investor preference for “practical” ventures over other kinds of startups.

Health-tech’s promise depends on evidence and delivery

Salva Health’s stated mission was to improve early breast-cancer detection, particularly where access to mammography and other diagnostic tools is limited. That aim helps explain the pitch’s clarity: the problem is serious, and access is an understandable constraint. TechCrunch’s account of the win establishes the company’s mission and competition result; it does not establish clinical efficacy, regulatory clearance, adoption or patient outcomes.

For any medical technology, the questions that follow a compelling mission are consequential:

  • Has clinical accuracy been demonstrated in an appropriate study, and how do false positives and false negatives affect patients?
  • What regulatory authorization is required in the intended markets, and has it been obtained?
  • Who will buy, operate and maintain the product—clinics, health systems, governments or community providers?
  • Can it be used affordably and reliably with local training, logistics and follow-up care?

A pitch prize can recognize the importance of a problem and the promise of an approach. It cannot substitute for clinical evidence or proof that a product reaches the people it is designed to serve.

Deep tech can be compelling when the use case is clear

The Top 20 included physical-world ideas such as smart-tire sensing, tamper-resistant security badges, robotic MRI surgery, tactile navigation and industrial adhesives, as well as software and other technologies. The finalist list suggests that the competition’s range extended well beyond AI applications.

GeCKo Materials was especially easy to understand on stage because an adhesive can be demonstrated directly: viewers can see the claimed grip and release rather than infer the benefit from a technical description. That is stage-readable proof, not independent validation of long-term durability, safety, manufacturing economics or customer demand. A strong demonstration makes a mechanism legible; it does not answer every commercial question.

Physical products may have defensible technical or manufacturing advantages, but they can also take longer to commercialize. Founders may need to validate performance in the field, establish production and supply chains, meet certification requirements or secure clinical evidence. Investors and buyers should distinguish a working prototype from a repeatable, supportable product.

Enterprise adoption is a product challenge, not a footnote

The event’s programming on data transformation, technical founders, SaaS, productivity, security and enterprise technology put company-building and deployment alongside technical invention. Day one, day two and the full agenda included subjects such as data, fintech, sustainability, mobility, logistics and enterprise productivity.

For founders selling to organizations, a persuasive demo is only the opening. Buyers also need to know whether a product integrates with existing systems, protects sensitive data, meets security and procurement requirements, works reliably, and produces a return that justifies its cost. Enterprise sales cycles can stretch across budget, compliance and organizational reviews. A successful pilot is not automatically a production deployment.

Categories blurred as products combined software and physical systems

The event organized sessions into stages such as AI, SaaS, fintech and space, but startup problems did not respect those boundaries. The finalists and Top 20 connected software with specialized data, materials with robotics, medical devices with health-system distribution, and 3D visualization with collaboration. The broader list included AI, transportation, security, robotics, biotech, accessibility, materials and enterprise applications, according to TechCrunch’s Top 20 coverage.

For a founder, that means the strongest description may be about the job a product performs rather than the fashionable category it occupies. An AI-enabled tool still has to fit a workflow; a device still needs software, service and distribution; a new material needs a buyer with an operational reason to switch. The hybrid nature of a product can create differentiation, but it can also add more dependencies to execute.

What founders can take from the pitches

The Startup Battlefield funnel—200 selected companies, 20 finalists and five in the final round—made communication part of the competition. TechCrunch described the 200 as selected early-stage companies; the funnel and $100,000 equity-free prize are outlined in its announcement and winner coverage. For founders preparing a pitch or buyer presentation, a useful checklist is:

  1. Name the problem and buyer. Say who experiences the problem, who pays to solve it, and what makes the need urgent.
  2. Show the distinctive mechanism. Explain what the product does that an existing workflow or generic AI tool cannot, using a demonstration where it helps.
  3. Connect the demo to evidence. Separate what the audience can see from what remains to be validated through pilots, customer use, clinical studies or field testing.
  4. Make the business path concrete. Explain pricing logic, customer acquisition, integration needs and what must happen for a pilot to become a repeatable sale.
  5. Address the moat and the friction. Identify proprietary data, scientific know-how, manufacturing capability or other defensibility, then name the regulatory, operational or procurement barriers.
  6. State the next proof point. Describe the specific evidence or milestone that would reduce the biggest risk—not merely the next feature or larger audience.

What investors and readers should verify

A conference selection, a stage demonstration or a competition win is evidence of recognition in that setting, not proof of durable success. Before treating a startup’s pitch as an investment or purchasing case, check what has been independently established and what remains an ambition.

  • For AI products, verify the workflow advantage, data rights, reliability, privacy protections and whether customers will pay beyond a trial.
  • For health products, verify clinical evidence, regulatory status, intended use and a realistic route to distribution and follow-up.
  • For hardware and materials, verify repeatability, durability, production costs, safety and customer testing outside a presentation setting.
  • For enterprise software, verify deployments, integration effort, security controls, renewal behavior and measurable customer value.
  • For every category, distinguish prototype, pilot, commercial availability and scaled adoption; these are different stages, not interchangeable signs of traction.

The most durable lesson from Disrupt 2024 is not a prediction that one category will dominate. It is a useful standard for evaluating innovation: look for a consequential problem, a distinctive solution, credible evidence and a plausible route to the people who need it. The event offered examples of that combination, while leaving the hard questions of execution and outcomes to be answered beyond the stage.
