Expel announced on October 1, 2024, that Kevin Mandia, founder of cybersecurity company Mandiant, had joined its board of directors. Mandia said he was drawn to Expel’s leadership, products, services and focus on customers. The appointment gives Expel a director with decades of security-industry experience as the company builds its managed detection and response business.
Who is Kevin Mandia?
Mandia founded Mandiant, a cybersecurity company known for its work in incident response and threat intelligence. In its October 1, 2024 announcement, Expel described him as bringing more than three decades of security leadership and venture capital expertise.
Axios also reported that Mandia joined Expel as an independent director. Expel’s announcement confirms his board appointment but does not use that classification.
Why did Mandia join Expel’s board?
Mandia said his decision reflected confidence in the company and its customer focus: “I believe in Expel’s leadership, products, and services, along with its commitment to solving critical security challenges for its customers, and that is what excites me as I join this remarkable team.”

What does Expel do?
Expel describes its business as managed detection and response (MDR): security services intended to help organizations detect and respond to cyber threats. The company says its coverage operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. Those are Expel’s descriptions of its services, not an independent assessment of their performance.
What did Expel report about its growth?
In the same October 1, 2024 announcement, Expel reported 50% year-over-year revenue growth from fiscal year 2023 to fiscal year 2024 and more than $100 million in annual recurring revenue as of FY24. These are company-reported figures; the announcement does not establish that they were independently verified or audited.

The announcement adds an experienced security-industry figure to Expel’s board and offers context for the company’s effort to grow its MDR business. It does not, by itself, establish how Mandia’s appointment affected company performance or whether he remains on the board today.
