Kenya confirmed its first imported case of Bundibugyo virus disease on 6 October 2026. The Kenyan patient, who had been living in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), died in Nairobi on 5 October. As of the 6 October reports, authorities had listed 28 contacts and were tracing people who traveled on the same flight; later contact outcomes were not established in the available updates.
What Kenya confirmed
Kenyan authorities confirmed one case of Bundibugyo virus disease, a form of Ebola virus disease, on 6 October 2026. The patient was a Kenyan citizen who had been living in the DRC and became ill there. The World Health Organization (WHO) said samples tested positive at both Kenya’s National Virology Reference Laboratory and the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI). The patient received supportive care but died on the night of 5 October. Burial took place on 6 October under Kenya’s safe and dignified burial protocol. WHO’s 6 October account gives the disease designation, laboratory confirmation and response details.
How the patient traveled to Nairobi
- Before the journey: The patient had been living in the DRC, became ill there and was treated at several health facilities, according to WHO.
- 2 October: The patient traveled by road through Kampala, Uganda.
- 3 October: The patient flew to Nairobi. After being transported to a Nairobi hospital, the patient was quickly isolated.
- 5–6 October: The patient died on the night of 5 October and was buried the following day under the national safe and dignified burial protocol.
K24 reported that the flight was Jumbo Jet flight 8523 and that routine public-health screening took place at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. That flight identification is reported by K24; WHO’s account corroborates the broader route and arrival dates. K24’s report attributes the briefing to Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale.
What authorities were doing about contacts
WHO’s 6 October update said authorities had listed 28 contacts, including family members and health workers who cared for the patient. They were also tracing 23 passengers and four crew members from the flight. Follow-up and quarantine arrangements were being made for people assessed to be at risk. These are initial figures reported on 6 October, not later totals, and the available updates do not establish whether any listed contacts subsequently tested positive or completed follow-up. WHO’s response update describes the investigation and contact work.

Screening, testing and workforce preparation
As of 6 October, Kenya had screened 652,584 travelers, tested 267 suspected samples and trained 4,971 health workers, according to the Kenya News Agency’s account of the health secretary’s briefing. WHO summarized the same response figures as more than 652,000 travelers screened, 267 suspected samples tested and around 5,000 workers trained. These are dated snapshots of the response, not measures of current activity. Kenya News Agency’s report provides the more exact figures; the WHO update gives rounded totals.
How Bundibugyo virus spreads
WHO says Bundibugyo virus spreads through direct contact with an infected person’s blood or body fluids, or with materials contaminated by them. The route matters: simply being near someone is not, by itself, the transmission route WHO describes. Kenya’s reported response focuses on investigating the case, surveillance, contact follow-up, screening at high-risk points of entry and communication with communities. For personal guidance, follow current instructions from Kenya’s Ministry of Health and other public-health authorities rather than relying on consumer products or self-diagnosis. WHO’s Ebola virus disease fact sheet explains transmission.

How this case fits the wider outbreak
WHO’s 6 October 2026 account places Kenya’s case in the context of an ongoing Bundibugyo virus disease outbreak in the DRC. It says Uganda had ended its latest outbreak in August 2026 and notes a travel-related case in France in June 2026. WHO described Kenya as the fourth country to confirm disease in this outbreak context. These details describe the regional context as reported on 6 October; they do not establish later outbreak totals or developments. WHO’s regional update provides that account.
