In an October 2023 interview with TechCrunch, Keith Rabois said Founders Fund cut the size of a newly announced fund by half after concluding that a larger fund would not offer a good path to venture returns in the market conditions it saw. He also discussed Traba, a marketplace for hourly light-industrial workers, his outlook on Faire, and his then-stated support for Nikki Haley. These are Rabois’s views as expressed in 2023, not a report on his current roles, investments or political preferences.

TechCrunch’s October 27, 2023 interview, conducted by Connie Loizos, is an edited account of a longer conversation. At the time, the publication described Rabois as a Founders Fund general partner and OpenStore CEO. His comments below should be read in that historical context.

Why Founders Fund reduced its fund size

Rabois said the firm cut the size of a newly announced fund by half after it had secured commitments and was proceeding. He explained: “After we had the commitments, and we were proceeding, we realized that there wasn’t a great way to generate venture returns with that size fund in the world we live in.”

His point was about the relationship between the amount of capital a venture fund has to deploy and the opportunities it believes can produce returns. A larger fund needs to put more money to work, and Rabois said the firm concluded that the market conditions it saw did not support doing so at the originally planned scale. He did not recall the official final amount in the interview, so the conversation does not establish a precise fund size.

Why Traba interested him

Rabois identified Traba as his newest investment discussed in the interview. The company connects hourly workers with light-industrial employers, including warehouses and event-staffing businesses. The appeal, in his account, was that employers’ staffing needs can vary: they may need more workers at busy times and fewer when demand subsides.

That makes the investment thesis a case for matching flexible labor supply with changing operational demand. It is Rabois’s rationale for the opportunity, not independent evidence of Traba’s performance or the effectiveness of its marketplace.

The market-size and seasonal figures

Rabois put the light-industrial market at about $50 billion a year and said 40% of e-commerce occurs during the holiday season. Both figures were his statements in the interview; TechCrunch did not cite an independent underlying dataset for them. They help explain the scale and seasonality he saw in the opportunity, but should not be treated as independently verified market measurements.

What he said about Faire

The interview also covered Faire, a marketplace connecting independent brands with retailers. Rabois expressed confidence in its business prospects. That confidence is an investor’s opinion, particularly relevant because he was a Faire investor and board member; it is not a neutral assessment or a guarantee of future performance.

Some financing and valuation figures appear in the interview’s questions as context. The interview alone does not independently verify those figures, so they should not be treated as established financial data on the strength of this source.

His comments on politics, OpenAI and secondary shares

Presidential politics

Asked whom he supported for president, Rabois said he backed Nikki Haley and praised Ron DeSantis. Those were his stated views in October 2023. The interview does not establish his present political preferences.

Other topics in the conversation

Rabois also commented on OpenAI, transactions involving private-company secondary shares, and Marc Andreessen’s technology manifesto. These remarks belong to the same 2023 conversation and should be understood as his opinions at that time, rather than as a current assessment of those subjects.

How to read the interview

  • Fundraising: The interview records Rabois’s explanation for reducing a fund’s planned scale, but not a recalled final amount.
  • Investments: His views on Traba and Faire describe the investment rationale and his confidence, not independently measured company results.
  • Market figures: The $50 billion annual estimate and 40% seasonal e-commerce claim are attributed to Rabois and are not independently sourced in the article.
  • Politics and other commentary: These are statements from October 2023, not confirmation of his views or the companies’ circumstances today.
