Verdict: The FCA’s warning records identify KayaFX as unauthorised in the UK and say it was targeting UK consumers. Treat it as high risk and do not deposit unless you can independently verify the firm and its permissions; the warning records are historical, so check the live FCA register and warning record before acting.

A 2022 Financial Ombudsman decision also upheld one consumer’s complaint involving KayaFX, finding misrepresentation and breach of contractual obligations on the evidence in that case. That was an individual decision, not a criminal ruling or a finding about every customer.

Is Kayafx a legitimate broker?

For UK consumers, the FCA warning records say KayaFX was not authorised and was targeting people in the UK. One FCA warning was last updated on 29 March 2018; another was last updated on 1 June 2021. These are dated warnings, not evidence that a new notice was issued in 2026. Check the live regulator register and warning record before publication or making a decision.

A legitimate broker should make its legal identity easy to check. At a minimum, it should publish:

  • Its full registered company name;
  • the country where it is incorporated;
  • the financial regulator supervising its investment services;
  • a licence or reference number;
  • a verifiable registered address; and
  • clear information about client-money protection, withdrawals, fees and complaints.

The name displayed on a trading site is not enough. A fraudster can copy a real company’s branding, display a fake licence number or claim to be regulated in a jurisdiction where the customer has little practical protection.

For a UK customer, check the FCA Financial Services Register and Firm Checker. Search the exact legal entity, not merely “KayaFX”. The register entry should show permission for the relevant activity. A firm that is merely listed as an appointed representative, or one with permissions unrelated to the service advertised, is not automatically authorised to provide that service.

If the firm claims regulation elsewhere, check that regulator’s own register by typing its address into your browser yourself. Do not use a link supplied by a salesperson. If you cannot match the legal company and relevant permissions to a live regulatory entry, do not assume it is authorised.

What the FCA and Financial Ombudsman records say

The FCA’s KayaFX warning says the firm was unauthorised and targeting UK consumers. The warning advises consumers to check the Financial Services Register. It also says that money given to an unauthorised firm is not covered by the Financial Ombudsman Service or the Financial Services Compensation Scheme through that firm.

In decision DRN-3577211, the Financial Ombudsman considered one consumer’s complaint about payments to what she believed was her KayaFX trading account. The consumer said she could not withdraw funds and that KayaFX stopped responding. Ombudsman Tony Massiah found misrepresentation and breach of contractual obligations on the evidence in that dispute, upheld the complaint, and directed Sainsbury’s Bank Plc to refund the consumer’s losses with interest. This is a case-specific decision, not a criminal conviction, a finding about all KayaFX customers, or a guarantee that another customer can recover money.

Why an unverified forex broker is dangerous

Forex and CFD trading is high risk: leverage can magnify market movements, spreads can widen and a customer can lose money quickly. Using an unauthorised or unidentified broker adds a separate risk—the platform may control the account balance, trading software and withdrawal process.

Regulatory authorisation and permissions matter because they determine which formal complaint routes or protections may apply. UK protections depend on the specific firm, permissions, product and facts. A trading dashboard showing profits is not proof that trades are genuine. A platform can display a balance without showing that funds are available to withdraw.

Warning signs to check before depositing

Warning sign Why it matters
Unsolicited calls, messages or social-media contact The FCA warns consumers to be cautious about unsolicited contact; impersonation scams may start this way.
Guaranteed returns or implausibly attractive claims These are warning signs identified in FCA guidance about forex scams.
Pressure to deposit more High-pressure tactics can push consumers into decisions before they verify the firm.
Payment to a personal bank account or cryptocurrency wallet The recipient may not be the broker. Check the payment beneficiary against the firm’s verified identity.
Withdrawal fees demanded in advance Do not send more money on the promise that it will unlock a balance. Contact your bank or payment provider and seek official guidance.
Regulation details that do not match Check the legal entity, permissions and contact details against the regulator’s own register.
Requests to install remote-access software Remote access can expose banking sessions, passwords and security codes.

How to check KayaFX step by step

  1. Find the legal entity. Look in the website footer, terms and conditions and account-opening documents. “KayaFX” may be a brand rather than a company.
  2. Check the regulator directly. Use the FCA Firm Checker and Financial Services Register if you are in the UK. Check that the firm has permissions for the service offered.
  3. Compare contact details. The telephone number, domain, email address and physical address should match the regulator’s entry. A copied licence number with different contact details may indicate a clone firm.
  4. Check warnings. Search the FCA warnings page and your local regulator’s alerts for the brand, domain and legal company name. A missing warning is not proof of legitimacy.
  5. Check the payment beneficiary. Do not send money to an individual or unrelated company when the supposed broker claims to be a regulated business.
  6. If you have already paid, contact your bank promptly. Preserve records and ask your bank or payment provider what steps may be available. Do not pay an additional fee just to test a withdrawal.

Be careful with search-engine adverts. A result for a broker’s name can be a paid advertisement or a lookalike domain. Use official regulator websites and verified contact details.

Does a professional trading platform prove anything?

No. MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5 and browser-based dashboards are software tools, not regulatory approvals. Access to a recognised platform does not prove that a broker is authorised or that a displayed balance can be withdrawn.

Likewise, screenshots of registration, certificates, awards, analyst profiles and customer testimonials are not substitutes for an independent register search. The legal entity and the permissions attached to it matter more than the appearance of the website.

What to do if KayaFX refuses a withdrawal

Stop sending money. Do not pay a supposed tax, clearance charge, account-upgrade fee or recovery fee to release a balance. The FCA warns that people who have lost money may be targeted with follow-up recovery offers.

  1. Save the website address, account number, transaction history, emails, chat logs, telephone numbers and wallet addresses.
  2. Contact your bank or payment provider promptly using verified contact details. Explain that you may have been deceived by an investment scam and ask what fraud or payment dispute process may be available. Recovery is not guaranteed.
  3. If cryptocurrency was used, contact the exchange involved and retain transaction records. Recovery is not guaranteed.
  4. Change passwords shared with the broker. Enable two-factor authentication and contact your bank if you installed remote-access software.
  5. Report suspected scams to the FCA using its official reporting route, and contact the appropriate law-enforcement authority in your area.
  6. Be sceptical of anyone promising to recover money for an upfront fee.

Are KayaFX trading losses covered by the FSCS?

Do not assume so. The FCA’s KayaFX warning says consumers who give money to an unauthorised firm will not be covered by the Financial Ombudsman Service or the Financial Services Compensation Scheme through that firm. In general, protections and complaint routes depend on the firm, its permissions, the product and the circumstances. Ordinary trading losses are not automatically reimbursed.

Should you open a KayaFX account?

No UK consumer should treat KayaFX as authorised on the basis of its website or a salesperson’s claims. The FCA warning records identify KayaFX as unauthorised in the UK. Check the live register and warning record; if you cannot verify the firm and its relevant permissions, do not deposit.

When assessing any broker, compare its regulatory authorisation and scope of permission, contracting legal entity, available complaint routes, and whether its contact details match the regulator’s register. Do not let a salesperson rush you into a leveraged trade.

FAQ

Is KayaFX a scam?

The FCA warning records identify KayaFX as unauthorised in the UK and targeting UK consumers. A Financial Ombudsman decision found misrepresentation and breach of contractual obligations in one consumer’s case. These records support a strong warning, but do not establish a criminal conviction or what happened to every customer.

Is KayaFX regulated by the FCA?

The FCA’s dated warning records say KayaFX was unauthorised. Check the live FCA Register and Firm Checker for the exact legal entity and relevant permissions before acting; a brand name or FCA logo is not sufficient evidence.

Can I get my money back from KayaFX?

There is no guaranteed recovery route. Contact your bank or payment provider promptly, preserve evidence and report suspected scams to the FCA. The Ombudsman decision involving Sainsbury’s Bank concerned one consumer and does not guarantee another person’s outcome.

Does KayaFX use MetaTrader?

Whether a broker offers MetaTrader or another recognised platform does not prove that it is genuine or regulated. Trading software and regulatory authorisation are separate issues.

What should I do if KayaFX asks for more money before a withdrawal?

Do not pay a purported tax, insurance, verification or release fee without independently checking the claim. Contact your bank or payment provider and use official reporting routes. Be wary of anyone offering recovery for an upfront fee.
