A separate May 2026 order reportedly awarded Perry’s side attorney fees and court costs.
How the mansion dispute began
Perry and Orlando Bloom agreed in 2020 to buy a Montecito estate from Carl Westcott for $15 million. Perry’s business manager, Bernie Gudvi, handled the purchase and was technically the defendant in the original case, according to the Associated Press. Days after agreeing to the sale, Westcott tried to back out, arguing that he lacked the mental capacity to make the deal. In 2023, Perry’s side prevailed at trial and the sale contract was upheld, AP reported.
The later proceedings addressed money tied to the delayed closing, including the property’s rental value, repairs and the unpaid balance of the purchase price. Perry summed up what she wanted from the trial in one word—“Justice”—according to AP’s August 26, 2025 report.
Why reports give two different damages totals
The November and January accounts do not agree on the total. Realtor.com’s November 26, 2025 report said Judge Joseph Lipner’s damages decision totaled $1,842,142.84. Its January 7, 2026 report described the statement of decision as setting a total of $1,938,082.84. The reviewed news reports do not establish which figure should be treated as definitive, so the difference should not be silently reconciled.

The November report itemized $2,795,000 for lost rental income from September 2020 through March 31, 2024, less $1,062,736 in retained capital and $149,703 in lost interest; it said repairs were limited to $259,581.84. The same account said that calculation would leave $4,157,857.16 of the sale balance due. The January account gives a higher damages total and says Westcott would receive just over $4 million. Because the figures differ, the November itemization should not be assumed to explain the January total precisely.
In its January account, Realtor.com quoted Judge Lipner: “There is no reason to believe that this unique and attractive property would not rent for all 43 months.” That statement concerns the court’s rental-value reasoning; it does not resolve the discrepancy between the outlet’s two reported totals.

What “recover $1.8 million” means here
Reports described the damages award as an offset against the unpaid sale price, not a standalone cash payment to Perry. The November account said the damages would be deducted from the roughly $6 million balance, leaving $4,157,857.16 due to Westcott. The January report characterized the remaining amount as just over $4 million. These are reported calculations; the amounts should not be described as paid or collected based on those reports alone.
The later attorney-fee order was separate
Digital Music News reported that a May 28, 2026 order awarded Perry’s side more than $3 million in attorney fees and nearly $345,000 in court costs. The report said her team had requested $4.5 million for about 5,000 billable hours. That fee-and-cost order is separate from the damages calculation; adding the figures together and calling the result a single recovery would obscure that distinction. The outlet repeated the lower November damages total, so its report does not settle the discrepancy.

Westcott’s lawyer, Andrew J. Thomas, told Realtor.com: “We are glad the court ruled that the Westcott family is entitled to receive most of the remaining $6 million still owed to them.” That is counsel’s characterization, not a court finding.
