Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara said the state estimated drought losses of ₹46,000 crore across 177 taluks. The figure, reported by The New Indian Express on 6 October 2026, is a state loss estimate—not a central relief award, payment to farmers or final independent audit.
What does the ₹46,000 crore figure refer to?
It is the estimated drought loss attributed to 177 taluks whose losses had been assessed, according to Parameshwara. The report does not provide the underlying memorandum or a detailed calculation method, so the number should be understood as a government-reported estimate rather than an independently verified final total.
Is ₹46,000 crore the amount Karnataka has requested from the Centre?
No. The estimated loss and the compensation request are separate figures. The New Indian Express reported on 6 October that Parameshwara put the request at ₹10,000–11,000 crore and said the state would submit a final memorandum with Chief Minister D K Shivakumar. A Hindustan Times report dated 5 October 2026 instead described a request of about ₹7,500 crore under central relief norms. These are different dated reports; neither establishes an approved amount.
How many taluks are affected, and could the estimate rise?
Counts differ by what had been assessed or verified at the time of each report. On 3 October, Public TV English reported that 217 taluks had been declared drought-hit: loss assessment was complete in 177, with work underway in 40 more. Parameshwara said the combined estimate could reach ₹50,000–60,000 crore once those 40 were assessed. That was a conditional projection, not a completed statewide total.

A 5 October Hindustan Times account also said 217 of Karnataka’s 240 taluks had been declared drought-affected, while ground-truthing remained to be carried out in 23. The figures describe different stages of assessment and verification; they should not be treated as interchangeable counts.
Has Karnataka received central drought relief?
The contemporaneous reports describe an assessment and request process, not a confirmed relief decision. The New Indian Express said central teams had assessed the initially declared 101 taluks and had been asked to assess another 77 on the second list. Their report was to go to the Union government, after which the state would seek compensation based on the assessment. Hindustan Times reported field inspections continuing through 6 October. Neither account confirms that aid had been approved or paid.

Why do published figures vary?
Reports use different dates, scopes and levels of precision. India Today, citing a Chief Minister’s Office statement on 3 October, reported ₹46,324.50 crore in estimated loss and a ₹7,142.64 crore relief request. Those precise figures differ from the rounded loss estimate and the request amounts reported elsewhere; they should remain attributed to that statement rather than combined into a single settled total.
