Washington Harbour Partners led the round and Bison Ventures co-led it, with MetaVC Partners and other investors participating. The “Bill Gates-backed fund” connection refers to MetaVC—not a disclosed direct investment by Gates in Kapta.
Who invested in Kapta Space?
Kapta’s financing announcement names Washington Harbour Partners as lead investor and Bison Ventures as co-lead. MetaVC Partners, MYDA Capital, Entrada Ventures, Aurelia Foundry, and Fitz Gate Ventures also participated. Kapta says the Series A brings its total funding to $30 million. GeekWire reports that MetaVC, an earlier Kapta backer, is a metamaterials-focused fund backed by Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and former Microsoft executive Nathan Myhrvold. That is the basis for the “Bill Gates-backed fund” description; the report does not say Gates personally invested in Kapta. GeekWire also reports an earlier $5 million seed round led by MetaVC and a $1.8 million Department of Defense grant. GeekWire, October 9, 2026.

Kapta is developing electronically steerable radar payloads for satellites, aimed at intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and tracking missions. Its named system architecture is MESA, short for Metamaterial Electronically Scanned Array. The company describes MESA as modular and software-defined, combining broad field of regard and rapid beam steering with scalable apertures. These are company descriptions; the cited material does not provide independently validated, head-to-head performance measurements.

Defense and tracking applications
Kapta says its radar is intended to support moving target indication (MTI)—detecting and tracking moving objects—as well as wide-area tracking of dynamic targets on land, at sea, and in the air. The company has said it secured multiple classified MTI contracts earlier in 2026, but its announcement does not identify the customers, contract values, or terms.
Commercial imaging applications
The company also identifies synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging as an intended use. It describes potential commercial applications including geospatial SAR imagery and InSAR change detection for mining, energy, and transportation. These are stated applications, not evidence that every service is already operational or available to customers. Kapta Space technology page.

What will the $24 million fund?
Kapta says it plans to use the financing to scale payload production for its MTI missions. Its near-term priorities include flight qualification, expanding manufacturing capacity, and preparing for an initial orbital demonstration. The announcement gives no firm launch date.
Payload reported that Kapta was executing on two high-profile demonstration missions and quoted CEO Milton Perque estimating flight heritage in the next 24 to 36 months. That is a reported expectation, not a confirmed launch schedule. Payload, October 9, 2026.

How does the new funding fit Kapta’s earlier financing?
GeekWire reports Kapta previously raised a $5 million seed round led by MetaVC and received a $1.8 million DoD grant. Separately, the U.S. Small Business Administration’s SBIR.gov portfolio lists a $1,745,856 Phase II award to Kapta Space Corp. under the topic “Steerable X-Band Metasurface Antenna for Spaceborne Radar”; the database record lists 2023 as the year of first award. The available information does not establish whether that government award is the same funding as the separately reported $1.8 million grant, so the amounts should not be treated as interchangeable. The funding announcement and company technology materials describe Kapta’s intended architecture and mission uses, but they do not establish comparative results against other satellite radar systems. They provide no independently comparable figures for payload cost, power consumption, image resolution, coverage, or revisit performance. Those measures, along with latency and orbital deployment status, would be needed for a grounded comparison.

Kapta founder and CEO Milton Perque said the company’s view is that “The mission calls for persistent awareness, and that requires us to rethink how radar has to work at constellation scale,” adding, “Traditional architectures are cost-prohibitive and were never designed for the scale these missions now demand.” Washington Harbour Partners founder and CEO Mina Faltas said, “Kapta’s MESA architecture changes that equation with a modular, highly manufacturable approach to electronically steerable radar.” These are statements from the financing announcement, not independent performance findings.
