Kalyani Group’s Protected Vehicles: What the 2018 “Breakthrough” Meant

The 2018 “breakthrough” referred to vehicle development and reported orders. KSSL’s portfolio has since included multiple protected-vehicle types, with later M4 and Mbada announcements adding distinct company specifications and claims.

“Major breakthrough” was the framing of a 2018 report about Kalyani Group’s protected-vehicle development and reported orders—not an independently established market ranking. Since then, Kalyani Strategic Systems Limited (KSSL) has listed a broader vehicle portfolio, Bharat Forge announced a manufacturing cooperation with Paramount Group in 2021, and Paramount announced the KSSL co-developed Mbada platform in 2026. The models serve different roles, and their published specifications come from different dates and company sources.

What did the 2018 “breakthrough” refer to?

IPF Online used the phrase in its 12 April 2018 report, which described a developing protected-vehicle range and reported two orders: Bharat Forge had received an order for 10 Class II 4×4 armoured personnel carriers (APCs) for United Nations missions of the Indian Army, and an order for an Armoured Troops Carrier (ATC) from an Asian country. The report did not establish whether those vehicles were subsequently delivered or describe their present status. Read the 2018 report.

The report also gave early product specifications. It described the APC as having a 230–280 HP diesel engine, 14 kg TNT under-hull blast protection and 21 kg TNT under-wheel protection. For the ATC, it stated capacity for 12–14 crew members plus cargo and 6 kg TNT blast protection. These are figures reported in 2018, not independently verified performance results.

In that report, Bharat Forge defence and aerospace president and CEO Rajinder Singh Bhatia said the company wanted to make “world-class products” focused on lethality, off-road mobility and protection. The wording captures the development ambition behind the coverage; it does not establish a comparative market position.

What protected vehicles does KSSL list?

KSSL’s protected-vehicles portfolio includes several vehicle types, not just the Kalyani M4. Its page lists the following platforms and categories. Specifications and equipment differ by vehicle; a feature shown for one should not be assumed to apply across the range. See KSSL’s protected-vehicle portfolio.

  • Kalyani M4
  • Kalyani Maverick
  • Mine Protected Vehicle
  • Armoured Personnel Carrier
  • Light Bullet-Proof Vehicle
  • Light Tactical Vehicle
  • Ultra-Light Strike Vehicle
  • Armoured Troops Carrier

KSSL also lists equipment and systems such as run-flat inserts, central tyre inflation systems, radios and intercoms, winches, fire suppression and vehicle tracking. The page does not present these as standard features on every platform.

APC and mine-protected vehicle

For its listed APC, KSSL specifies Class II protection (STANAG 2a and 2b), a 230–280 HP turbo-diesel engine, and protection against 14 kg TNT under the hull and 21 kg TNT under a wheel. It also lists a rotating armoured turret with modular weapon mounts and says the vehicle was tested by Indian military agencies. KSSL’s mine-protected vehicle description repeats the under-hull and under-wheel figures and says the vehicle was tested by the Indian Army. These are KSSL’s claims; the cited page is not an independent test report.

Armoured Troops Carrier and lighter vehicles

KSSL describes the ATC as a troop-logistics vehicle with room for 12–14 crew members plus large cargo, and says it can also be used for emergency command and control. The company describes its Light Bullet-Proof Vehicle as available in 4×2 or 4×4 configurations and globally tested or evaluated. Its Light Tactical Vehicle is described as STANAG Class I and II and tested by the Indian Army. Those descriptions are specific to the named platforms, not a common specification for the whole portfolio.

What is the Kalyani M4?

The Kalyani M4 is a multi-role protected mobility platform. In a 22 February 2021 announcement, KSSL said Bharat Forge and Paramount Group had agreed to combine their technologies and capabilities to manufacture armoured vehicles in India. The announcement described the M4 as intended for rough terrain and areas affected by mines and improvised explosive devices (IEDs). It said the vehicle had completed a series of extreme vehicle trials in India and cited protection up to a 50 kg TNT side blast or IED/roadside bomb. Read KSSL’s 2021 announcement.

The trial and blast-protection statements are the companies’ 2021 claims. That announcement does not, by itself, establish the M4’s current production or service status.

What is Mbada, and how is it related to KSSL?

On 16 September 2026, Paramount Group announced Mbada, a 4×4 light-armoured mobility platform it said was co-developed from inception with KSSL. Paramount said the concept debuted at Eurosatory 2026 under the name “Simha,” identified as the variant for India and other global markets. It described Mbada as aimed at markets including India, Africa and South Asia, and listed possible missions such as reconnaissance, internal security, border protection, special operations, troop transport, logistics, command and control, surveillance and force protection. Paramount said Mbada would make its public debut at AAD 2026. Read Paramount’s announcement.

Paramount published these Mbada specifications in September 2026. They are vendor specifications, not independent test results.

How should the vehicle claims be compared?

The APC, M4 and Mbada figures are not a like-for-like comparison. They refer to different platforms, roles and source dates: the APC specifications were reported in 2018 and are also listed by KSSL; the M4’s 50 kg side-blast claim appeared in KSSL’s 2021 release; and Mbada’s specifications were published by Paramount in 2026. The figures also describe different blast conditions, so they should not be ranked as though they measured the same test.

For a useful comparison, check the specific configuration and the evidence behind each claim:

  • Role and mission: Determine whether the vehicle is intended for troop transport, logistics, reconnaissance or another task.
  • Crew and payload: Separate passenger capacity from cargo capacity; a stated crew figure alone does not establish load capacity.
  • Mobility: Look for the terrain and operating conditions described, as well as drivetrain and vehicle configuration.
  • Protection: Identify whether a figure refers to a blast beneath a wheel, beneath the hull or at the side, and note the stated standard or test basis.
  • Configuration and date: Match the exact model and version to the dated source; vendor specifications and test claims are not interchangeable with independent verification.
