Kalshi’s March 23, 2026 announcement was about moving certain insider-trading checks earlier—not banning every politician or athlete from the platform. The exchange said it would try to stop political candidates from trading on their own campaigns and sports participants from trading in markets associated with affiliated leagues in which they are involved. It also acknowledged that screening can miss trades.
What Kalshi announced
Kalshi said it was adding technological guardrails to preemptively block political candidates from trading on their own campaigns. It said elected officials, including members of Congress, were already blocked. The candidate control described in the announcement concerned a candidate’s own campaign, not every market a politician might want to trade. Kalshi’s March 23 announcement
For sports, Kalshi described restrictions for people involved in college and professional sports—including athletes, personnel and referees—when trading in markets associated with sports in affiliated leagues they are involved in. The company said it had developed screening lists over several months with league partners and IC360. It also pointed to a whistleblower feature on market pages.
What changed—and what did not
Kalshi said the relevant political and sports trades were already prohibited under its rules. The change was intended to move sports-related intervention from investigating a trade after it was placed toward screening that can block some trades before placement. The announcement did not establish a universal ban on all politicians or athletes trading in all markets.

Kalshi’s description is of its own controls, not independent proof that every person in the stated categories is identified or blocked. The company cautioned that no screening system is perfect; a pre-trade check can reduce opportunities without guaranteeing that prohibited trades will never occur.
Enforcement examples Kalshi later reported
In an April 22, 2026 update, Kalshi described three candidates who traded on their own races. The exchange said each received a five-year suspension; the fines below and the case descriptions are Kalshi’s account.

Kalshi’s April 22 enforcement update does not show how often its new screening blocks an attempted trade. These case amounts are individual enforcement outcomes, not a measure of how prevalent insider trading is.
How the CFTC fits in
Kalshi’s internal screening and discipline are separate from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission’s regulatory role. In a February 25, 2026 advisory, the CFTC’s Enforcement Division said it retains authority to police illegal trading practices on designated contract markets. The advisory discussed misuse of nonpublic information and fraud, among other practices including misappropriation of confidential information, pre-arranged trading and wash sales, disruptive trading, and manipulation. The advisory described a Kalshi case involving a candidate’s trades on their own candidacy with a $2,246.36 financial penalty—$246.36 in disgorgement and a $2,000 penalty—and a five-year suspension. It also described a case involving a YouTube-channel editor who likely had advance access to video information: a $20,397.58 financial penalty, comprising $5,397.58 in disgorgement and a $15,000 penalty, plus a two-year suspension. Those are case-specific figures in the CFTC’s account, not estimates of the frequency of violations.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to take from the announcement
- Scope matters: the stated controls target a candidate’s own campaign and sports-related markets connected to the leagues in which a sports participant is involved.
- Timing matters: Kalshi said it was trying to prevent some prohibited trades before placement rather than relying only on post-trade investigation.
- Limits matter: Kalshi itself said screening is imperfect. Its policy descriptions do not independently establish how effective the system is or how many attempts it stops.
- Rules and regulators are distinct: exchange screening does not replace the CFTC’s authority over illegal trading practices on designated contract markets.
Kalshi’s May 20, 2026 explainer describes broader screening for politically exposed people and sports professionals, including pattern recognition, account freezes, fines, suspensions and reporting confirmed violations to the CFTC. Those are the company’s descriptions of its rules and systems, not independent verification that every listed category is blocked from every market. Because eligibility and policies can change, consult Kalshi’s market-integrity policy for its current terms.
