CME Group’s Micro Gold futures and options are a sourced alternative for short-term gold-price exposure, but they are not prediction-market contracts. They use exchange-traded derivatives, with different sizing, settlement and risk. Kalshi has announced gold as part of its commodities expansion, but that announcement does not confirm which short-term gold contracts are currently open. Check the live listing and its rules before comparing products.
How CME gold derivatives differ from Kalshi event contracts
A Kalshi event contract is tied to a defined event outcome. Kalshi says contract prices reflect traders’ views about the chance of the event happening; that is the platform’s explanation, not evidence that prices are accurate forecasts. A CME gold futures contract instead gives exposure to movements in gold’s market price through an exchange-traded derivative. A futures position can gain or lose as the price moves, and its contract size, margin, expiration and settlement terms matter. Options have their own terms and require a premium. Neither instrument should be treated as interchangeable with a contract that settles on a yes-or-no event.

What CME’s Micro Gold products offer
Smaller futures contract size
CME lists standard Gold futures (GC) at 100 troy ounces per contract and Micro Gold futures (MGC) at 10 troy ounces. CME describes Micro Gold futures and options as one tenth the size of the benchmark Gold futures and options. Smaller size changes the scale of exposure; it does not remove the possibility of losses or make a position suitable for every account. Hours, price increments and settlement
CME describes nearly 23-hour, five-day access for its gold futures suite. Its Micro Metals page lists a $0.10-per-troy-ounce minimum fluctuation and physical settlement for Micro Gold futures. These are operational details to confirm against the current contract specifications before placing an order; trading hours and contract terms are not a promise of uninterrupted liquidity. How to decide whether this is the right kind of alternative
- Start with the payoff. If the goal is a contract tied to a precisely defined event, a futures contract is not a direct substitute. If the goal is exposure to gold-price movements, futures or options may be relevant, but their mechanics and risks differ.
- Read the full contract definition. For an event contract, identify the exact wording, resolution source and settlement terms. For a CME product, review contract size, expiration and settlement method.
- Check the actual capital commitment. For futures, look up current margin with the broker; for options, account for the premium and contract terms. Do not use a dated estimate as a current or universal requirement.
- Compare trading costs and liquidity at the time you trade. Check fees, bid-ask spread and market depth for the exact contract. A product’s existence alone does not establish that it is liquid or inexpensive.
- Confirm access and eligibility. Availability depends on the venue’s live listings and, for CME derivatives, broker, account and jurisdiction. Do not assume a market is available in your location.

- Open the venue’s current product or market listing and confirm that the specific gold contract is available.
- Read the contract rules, including the event wording and resolution source for an event contract, or the expiration and settlement terms for a derivative.
- Check current fees, bid-ask spread and order-book depth for the exact contract.
- For CME futures or options, confirm live trading hours, contract specifications and broker margin or premium requirements.
- Check account eligibility and jurisdictional restrictions with the venue or broker.
