When did Shina Chung become Kakao CEO?
Kakao appointed Chung Shin-a, known in English as Shina Chung, as CEO on March 28, 2024, following a shareholders’ meeting and a board meeting. The company said she had been internally nominated the previous December and had led reform efforts, including as co-chair of its Corporate Alignment Council and chair of its Strategic Committee. Before becoming CEO, she led Kakao Ventures. Kakao’s March 2024 announcement sets out the appointment and responsibilities.
On March 26, 2026, shareholders re-elected Chung as an inside director and Kakao’s board again appointed her CEO. The new term runs through March 2028, according to Kakao’s announcement. The distinction matters: 2026 was a reappointment, not her first appointment.

Chung’s background combines leadership within Kakao’s investment arm with earlier consulting and technology-industry experience. What direction has Kakao set under Chung?
In an October 2025 shareholder letter, Chung identified KakaoTalk and AI as strategic pillars and described governance restructuring and cost optimization as priorities. Kakao said it had 99 affiliates at that point, down from 132 at the start of her tenure, and set a goal of reducing the count to around 80 by the end of that fiscal year. In January 2026, Kakao framed its next phase as “directional growth,” emphasizing human-centric AI and a “Global Fandom OS.” The company’s group strategy announcement described its approach, rather than independently demonstrating results. What is the KakaoAI and KakaoX restructuring plan?
In August 2026, Kakao announced a planned spin-off under which Chung would lead a new KakaoAI entity. Yonhap reported that KakaoAI was intended to take responsibility for KakaoTalk and consumer AI, while the existing company would be renamed KakaoX and serve as an investment arm. Payments, mobility and entertainment businesses were described as remaining with KakaoX. These are announced plans, not confirmation that the spin-off or renaming has been completed. What does “ongoing crisis” mean in this context?
The cited appointment, strategy and restructuring announcements establish leadership changes and organizational plans, but they do not identify a specific event or condition as the “ongoing crisis.” Without a named, sourced development, that phrase should not be treated as a factual explanation for Chung’s appointment or reappointment. Kakao’s own October 2025 letter does state that the company was pursuing governance restructuring and cost optimization, but those priorities alone do not define a crisis.
