Elon Musk’s reply was blunt: “Just make good EVs!” But the line, posted in response to Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius’s criticism of the EU’s 2035 combustion-car policy, does not by itself prove that Europe is failing to switch to electric vehicles. The exchange points to a real policy debate: how to keep automakers investing and competing while making EVs affordable and charging practical for drivers.
What did Elon Musk say to Mercedes?
On August 11, 2025, Musk posted “Just make good EVs!” in response to Källenius’s public criticism of the EU’s 2035 policy, according to AS.com. The outlet described Musk as Tesla’s CEO and Källenius as Mercedes-Benz’s CEO and, at the time, president of the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA).
AS.com reported that Källenius called for EV purchase incentives and lower electricity costs at charging stations. That is a secondary account of his position, not a verified verbatim quotation. Musk’s one-liner is clear; the reporting does not establish that he offered a detailed rebuttal to Källenius’s specific proposals.
What is the disagreement about?
The exchange is less about whether automakers should build attractive electric cars than about the conditions needed to move the market. Musk’s response emphasizes products. Källenius’s reported position emphasizes policy and running costs alongside automaker efforts. Those approaches address different parts of the transition.

What did Mercedes say about going electric?
In a July 22, 2021 strategy update, Mercedes-Benz said the shift from combustion engines to EVs was feasible and underway. It described a conditional ambition to go all-electric by the end of the decade “where market conditions allow,” and said all newly launched vehicle architectures would be electric-only from 2025. The company also said it planned to invest more than €40 billion in battery-electric vehicles between 2022 and 2030. The conditional wording matters: Mercedes framed its all-electric ambition around market conditions. That is consistent with a debate about demand and costs, but it does not establish that Mercedes abandoned its plan or that the policy criticism was solely about the company’s product competitiveness.
Is Europe falling behind in electric cars?
The available accounts do not answer that broad question with a definitive comparison. In a September 15, 2025 opinion article, Transport & Environment author William Todts said European manufacturers’ EV sales grew “nearly 40%” in the first half of 2025 and argued that EU CO2 regulation was driving progress. Todts’s argument counters the idea that regulation is simply obstructing the industry: in his view, regulatory pressure encourages investment and competition. Källenius’s reported call for incentives and lower charging costs, by contrast, emphasizes the market conditions required for the transition. Neither perspective alone establishes whether Europe is gaining or losing ground against other regions.

For a household weighing an EV, this political exchange is not a substitute for comparing the costs of a specific car and charging setup. Incentives, vehicle prices and public charging costs can affect the decision, but the sources here do not provide current prices, eligibility rules or a cost comparison. The practical takeaway is to assess the full ownership picture in your location rather than infer that a car is affordable—or unaffordable—from a policy argument.
