JPMorgan analysts estimate that roughly $50 billion has flowed into digital assets so far in 2026, according to a report The Block covered on October 8, 2026. Annualized, the analysts put that pace at about $66 billion. That is higher than the $52 billion annualized pace they recorded in May, but still around half the pace of 2025. They also read rising ETF flows and futures positioning in the third quarter as a positive flow signal into Q4. That reading describes recent flow indicators. It is not a price forecast, and it does not promise that inflows will continue.
What the $50 billion figure counts
The estimate is a composite of several kinds of activity. It is not a tally of exchange-traded fund (ETF) subscriptions, and it is not a count of on-chain transfers. According to The Block’s account, JPMorgan’s usual version of the estimate combines four channels:
- crypto fund flows
- the flow impulse implied by CME futures
- crypto venture capital fundraising
- purchases of digital assets by publicly listed bitcoin miners and corporate treasuries
For this update, the analysts widened the calculation to include purchases by private corporate treasuries, private miners, and government-related entities. That change matters when you compare figures over time or across sources. A total that includes private and government buyers is not directly comparable with a figure built only from listed companies or from fund flows. The reported numbers are not split by channel, so the $50 billion should not be read as a measured cash total. It is also an analyst estimate that has not been independently verified.
The numbers and what each one measures
Several different figures are being quoted together. They use different windows, so they should not be added or swapped with one another.

| Measure | Figure reported | Window or date | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Year-to-date flows | About $50 billion | 2026 through the report date, October 8, 2026 | Money the composite estimate counts as having flowed in so far this year |
| Annualized 2026 pace | About $66 billion | The year-to-date pace extended across twelve months | A projection of the current rate, not money already received |
| Annualized pace in May | $52 billion | May 2026 | The earlier pace the same analysts cited |
| Previous year’s pace | Not stated in dollars | 2025, as compared by the analysts | The 2026 pace is around half of it, so 2025 ran at roughly twice this year’s rate |
The gap between the year-to-date total and the annualized figure reflects how much of the year has already passed. Readers should treat the $66 billion as a rate, not as a second pool of money.
What drove the first half of 2026
According to the analysts, the first half was driven mainly by two sources: bitcoin purchases by Strategy, a corporate treasury buyer, and crypto venture capital funding. ETF flows were a headwind during that period, with heavy outflows in May and June. The same channels that powered early-year totals were not the ones carrying the later improvement, which is one reason the analysts treat the third quarter separately.

What changed in the third quarter
ETF flows turned positive for the year
ETF flows improved after August and were positive for 2026 as of the report. The sign of that result depends on the window. Measured from the crypto-market downturn that began on October 10, 2025, the cumulative ETF picture is still negative. Both statements can be true at once, and a headline that quotes only one of them is answering a narrower question than it appears to.
Futures positioning rose
Institutional positions in CME bitcoin and ether futures increased over the two months before publication. Bitcoin positioning moved above its previous peak. Ether positioning approached its October 2025 high but, per the reported account, did not exceed it.

Trend-following traders began rebuilding longs
The analysts’ momentum signals indicated that trend-following traders, including commodity trading advisers (CTAs), had begun rebuilding long bitcoin and ether positions. CTAs are managed futures strategies that buy when prices have been rising and sell when they have been falling, so their positioning tends to follow price moves rather than lead them. That is why analysts track it as a momentum signal rather than as a source of new money.
The outflow side: miners and treasury buyers
Bitcoin miners were net sellers
Bitcoin miners were net sellers by about $1.8 billion this year, according to the analysts, with most of that shift attributed to publicly listed miners. The analysts linked some of the sales to funding investment in artificial-intelligence infrastructure. The $1.8 billion is a net figure, meaning sales were offset against purchases.

Treasury buyers are shifting how they fund purchases
Public corporate treasury buyers paid for digital-asset purchases with common share sales, debt, and preferred shares. The report describes a gradual shift away from debt toward preferred shares. The analysts note that this shift increases interest and dividend obligations, which are fixed commitments the company must keep meeting from its own cash flow.

“In all, while during the first half of the year the capital flow picture was dominated by corporate treasury buying and venture capital funding, in Q3 both ETF flows and futures positioning have increased pointing to greater participation by both retail and institutional investors, thus creating a positive flow momentum into Q4,” the analysts concluded.
The Block does not name the individual who wrote that sentence. The team is led by Nikolaos Panigirtzoglou.
The claim rests on two observations: ETF flows and futures positioning both rose in the third quarter. The analysts read that as a sign of broader retail and institutional participation. It is an interpretation of flow indicators. It does not say that prices must rise, and it does not guarantee that inflows will continue. The first-half story (treasury buying and venture funding) and the third-quarter story (ETFs and futures) also draw on different sources, and the account does not say how durable either will be.
How to use a flow headline as a personal-finance reader
Flow estimates describe where money has gone. They do not describe what the next price move will be. A few checks make these numbers more useful:
- Identify the window before comparing figures: year-to-date, annualized, or measured from October 10, 2025. Each can give a different sign and size.
- Keep channels separate. An ETF figure, a futures figure, and a composite estimate answer different questions.
- Read “momentum” as a description of recent activity, not as a target or a timing signal.
- Decide on any crypto position using your own time horizon, how much of a loss you could absorb, and the rest of your savings. A single analyst estimate is not a reason to change an allocation on its own.
Treat a flow headline as one input among several, and check the date and the window every time it is quoted.
