The Department says eligible borrowers will receive the reduction through June 30, 2028, as long as they remain enrolled and meet the program’s eligibility conditions. Nearly 2 million federal student-loan borrowers had enrolled since the benefit was announced earlier in summer 2026, according to the Department—not an independently audited count.
What the 1% student-loan auto-pay reduction means
The benefit reduces the interest rate on qualifying loans; it is not a 1% cut to your loan principal or monthly payment. The Department’s June 18, 2026 launch announcement described the total reduction as the existing 0.25 percentage-point auto-pay discount plus an additional 0.75 percentage point. Your payment and long-term interest costs depend on your loan balance, rate, repayment history, and eligibility, so the Department’s announcement does not establish a universal savings amount.

The Department announced the program on June 18, with an initial September 30 enrollment date. On September 29, it extended enrollment through December 31, 2026 and said the reduction would run through June 30, 2028. The later announcement controls the current dates. Who qualifies for the reduction?
The Department says the additional reduction applies to Federal Direct Loans originated after July 1, 2012, including loans held by student and parent borrowers. That description does not establish eligibility for every federal loan or any private student loan. The Department also references borrowers formerly in the SAVE plan who have enrolled in a different lawful repayment plan; being in that group alone does not confirm an individual loan qualifies.

Eligibility depends on your loan and account status. Check the loan type and origination date in your records and confirm with your servicer whether the reduction is reflected on your account. The Department’s announcement describes the program’s terms; it is not an individualized eligibility determination.
How to enroll in student-loan auto pay
If you are not already enrolled, use your loan servicer’s account—not a generic signup form—to set up automatic payments:
Rank #2
- Log in to your loan-servicer account.
- Choose the “auto pay” option.
- Provide the required checking- or savings-account information.
- Review and confirm the payment amounts and enrollment details shown by your servicer.
Auto pay authorizes the servicer to deduct your monthly student-loan payment from your checking or savings account. The Department says borrowers already enrolled had their interest rate adjusted automatically when it announced the extension, subject to eligibility. Check your servicer account to confirm both your enrollment status and the rate shown.
What if your loans are in default?
The Department says borrowers in default must take steps to bring eligible loans into good standing before enrolling in auto pay. Log in to StudentAid.gov, consolidate eligible loans, and apply for a new repayment plan. The Department says borrowers in default can access the benefit after their loans are brought into good standing. Follow the account-specific instructions for your loans before attempting to set up automatic payments.

What to keep active through June 30, 2028
Enrollment is not a one-time step if you want to keep receiving the reduction. The Department says borrowers must remain enrolled in auto pay and continue to meet eligibility criteria. If your bank account, payment arrangement, or repayment status changes, check with your servicer so you know whether auto pay remains active and whether the rate reduction still applies.

On September 29, 2026, the Department reported that nearly 2 million federal student-loan borrowers had enrolled in auto pay since the summer announcement. Under Secretary of Education Nicholas Kent said the enrollment was “helping borrowers reduce long-term interest accrual.” The figure is the Department’s reported enrollment count: it is not exactly 2 million, does not show how many borrowers are eligible, and is not an independently audited total.
