The latest estimate verified here puts John Paulson’s net worth at $3.48 billion, according to Grizzly Bulls on August 5, 2026. That is the publisher’s estimate, not an audited account of Paulson’s assets and debts. Fortune cited a different estimate—$3.8 billion from Forbes—in November 2024, so the two figures should be read with their dates and sources attached.
What is John Paulson’s net worth?
Grizzly Bulls lists Paulson’s net worth as $3.48 billion as of August 5, 2026. Its index describes the figure as a dynamic estimate based on public-market values and other records, with less easily valued assets updated periodically. Grizzly Bulls’ John Paulson profile is the source for that amount and date.
This is an estimate, not a public balance sheet or audited valuation of everything Paulson owns and owes. The available sources do not establish a complete accounting of his private assets and liabilities.
Why do published estimates differ?
Fortune reported on November 12, 2024 that Forbes estimated Paulson’s fortune at $3.8 billion. That is an earlier, separately attributed estimate—not a competing measurement made on the same date as Grizzly Bulls’ figure. Fortune’s report does not make the 2024 figure current. Net-worth estimates can differ because publishers use different valuation dates and methods, and some holdings are harder to value than publicly traded investments. No current Forbes or Bloomberg estimate was verified alongside the dated figures above. The most useful way to read any headline number is to identify its publisher and date rather than treat it as a definitive, continuously updated total.
How did John Paulson make his money?
Paulson made his fortune as an investor and hedge-fund manager. Reuters reported that he earned about $4 billion from his 2007 subprime-mortgage bet and received a $5 billion payout in 2010 from bets that the economy would recover. Those are reported earnings tied to past trades; neither amount is his present net worth. Reuters’ July 3, 2020 report describes the trades and his firm’s transition.

Paulson & Co.’s assets are not Paulson’s personal net worth
Reuters reported that Paulson & Co. oversaw $10.7 billion in assets at the start of 2020. Assets under management are money overseen by an investment firm, potentially including client capital; they are not the manager’s personal wealth. The figure therefore should not be added to or substituted for a personal net-worth estimate.
In July 2020, Paulson & Co. announced that it would return outside investor capital and become a private investment office. Paulson wrote in a letter, as quoted by Reuters: “After considerable reflection and careful thought, Paulson & Co. will convert into a private investment office and return all external investor capital.” That change is important context when describing the firm: its reported 2020 assets under management do not establish its present size or Paulson’s current wealth.

Reuters reported gifts of $400 million to Harvard University and $20 million to Central Park. These are reported donations, not a complete lifetime giving total, and the available information does not support using them to calculate his current net worth.
