John Deere’s Farm Forward is a 2019 vision video, not an announcement of one specific tractor or a promise that every farm can use every technology shown. It imagines artificial intelligence, automation, connectivity, analytics, and remote management helping farmers run operations and produce food more sustainably. The video is best read as a company’s picture of possible farming—not as independent proof of guaranteed productivity or profit gains.
What is John Deere’s Farm Forward video?
John Deere published the official Farm Forward video on February 20, 2019. Successful Farming covered it a week later, on February 27, describing the company’s aim as inspiring conversation and helping farmers picture what their operations might become.
John Deere’s description invites viewers to “Imagine what artificial intelligence, automation, and connectivity can do to grow your operation, improve your efficiency, and profitably increase your bottom line.” It also says the company shares a vision of a technology-powered farm to help farmers “sustainably produce food for a growing world.” Those are John Deere’s aspirations and promotional framing, not measured outcomes established by the video.
What future does the video present?
Automation with people still making decisions
The video presents machines taking on automated work, alongside analytics that can inform farm decisions. The vision is not simply that technology replaces a farmer: it is that automation and information support the farmer’s work. The sources describing the video do not specify which tasks are automated in every setting or how much human oversight each would require.

From data collection to decisions
Connected equipment can produce information, but collecting data is not the same as turning it into useful action. DTN/Progressive Farmer’s November 2019 discussion of data farming notes the growing importance of interpreting and managing farm data. That is useful context for the video’s analytics theme; it does not mean farms use identical systems or receive the same guidance.
Management beyond the cab
Remote access is another part of the vision: a farmer may be able to monitor or manage aspects of an operation away from the machine. The video presents this as a possibility enabled by connectivity, rather than establishing that every function works everywhere or without suitable equipment, service, and connectivity.

How the vision relates to John Deere services today
John Deere’s current Farm Forward campaign page for Canada describes several related services. Operations Center is presented as a place to collect, analyze, and share farm information with trusted advisors. JDLink is described as enabling real-time management away from the cab. The page also points to mobile apps and dealer Connected Support.
These current service descriptions help connect the video’s themes to offerings named by John Deere, but they do not show that every scene or capability in the 2019 video is available as a standard feature. The campaign page is Canada-specific; availability, terms, compatible equipment, and service details may differ by location. John Deere Canada directs readers to “Talk to your John Deere Dealer today about Connected Support.”

What the video does—and does not—establish
- It establishes a company vision: John Deere used AI, automation, connectivity, analytics, and remote management to depict possible future farm operations.
- It does not identify a purchase target: The title and coverage do not announce one physical product or model for farmers to buy. The related current offerings identified by John Deere are primarily services and software.
- It does not independently verify results: The sources reviewed do not provide a controlled evaluation of the video’s promises about efficiency, profitability, or sustainability.
- It is not a universal availability guide: Depicted concepts and current services should not be assumed to be available to every farm, market, or equipment setup.
John Deere’s 2020 sustainability report later described Farm Forward 2.0 as a portrayal of its vision for technology to increase productivity, in the context of the company’s precision-agriculture strategy. That report reflects John Deere’s corporate position in 2020, not an independent performance assessment of the video’s claims.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why it matters to farmers
The video’s useful question is not whether every farm already operates this way, but which parts of the vision solve a real operational problem. Automation, remote monitoring, and data analysis can be considered separately: a farmer evaluating them would need to look at fit with existing equipment, local service availability, connectivity, and whether the information can support a practical decision. The video itself does not answer those farm-specific questions.
