John Deere announced in July 2024 that it would cut nearly 600 production positions at three Midwest factories, with the changes announced to take effect August 30, 2024. The cuts affected sites in East Moline, Illinois, and Davenport and Dubuque, Iowa; a later Deere update in 2026 described renewed hiring in the region but did not say whether the same workers or positions were involved.
How many positions were affected, and where?
The Associated Press reported that the 2024 announcement covered nearly 600 production positions across three facilities. Its breakdown was 280 positions at East Moline, Illinois, and 310 across the Iowa plants: 211 in Davenport and 99 in Dubuque. The AP report described August 30, 2024, as the announced effective date. That is not confirmation of each affected employee’s individual separation date.
- East Moline, Illinois: 280 positions
- Davenport, Iowa: 211 positions
- Dubuque, Iowa: 99 positions
The allocations were reported contemporaneously by the AP; the cited reporting does not establish an original company notice or primary WARN filing with the complete site-by-site breakdown.
Why did Deere say it was making cuts?
Deere attributed the changes to rising operating costs and declining market demand. In a statement quoted by Farms.com, the company said that these pressures required “enterprise-wide changes in how work gets done” to help it achieve its goals and position the company for the future. Farms.com’s July 3, 2024 report said the statement followed a letter to salaried employees obtained by a local television station; it did not identify a speaker by name.

Contemporary coverage also situated the cuts amid weaker demand for farm equipment and Deere’s reduced 2024 profit forecast. That broader market context is distinct from the company’s stated rationale. CBS News’ report covered the announcement and the business outlook at the time.
What changed after the 2024 announcement?
In 2026, John Deere reported plans to bring more than 375 employees back across Quad Cities factory operations. The company also said it had brought back or hired more than 800 employees across Iowa and Illinois since January 2026. Deere’s newsroom update does not establish whether those people were among the workers affected in 2024 or whether the jobs were the same positions.

Deere separately reports a U.S. workforce of 30,000 employees at more than 60 locations in 16 states. That company profile provides a broad statement of current scale, not a directly comparable headcount from the time of the 2024 announcement.

The 2024 story is a dated account of a specific production-job reduction, not evidence of a new round of layoffs. The later hiring announcement shows that employment activity continued in the region, but it should not be read as proof that every displaced worker returned or that the 2024 job losses were reversed.

For someone assessing the personal-finance impact of a layoff, the distinction matters: an announced effective date and a company’s later regional hiring totals do not confirm an individual’s separation date, eligibility for benefits, recall status, or rehire. Those details depend on employer communications and the worker’s circumstances.
