There is no well-supported universal percentage for how much a John Deere tractor loses in resale value each year. “Depreciation” can mean either a change in market value or a tax method for recovering eligible business costs; they are different measures. For U.S. federal tax purposes, the IRS’s 2025 Farmer’s Tax Guide lists five-year GDS recovery for qualifying new farm machinery and equipment and seven-year GDS recovery for used machinery. Those periods do not predict a tractor’s resale price or physical life.
What does tractor depreciation mean?
Market depreciation is a change in what a buyer might pay for a tractor over time. Tax depreciation is a method for deducting eligible business-use cost over a specified period. A tax recovery period is not an estimate of a tractor’s useful life, its annual loss in resale value, or the amount it will sell for.
The available sources do not establish a John Deere-specific market depreciation rate. A resale estimate needs current, comparable market data for the particular tractor; a percentage without a model-specific source and underlying data would be misleading.
How long do you depreciate a farm tractor for tax purposes?

These are general classifications, not a guarantee that every tractor qualifies for a particular period. Tax treatment depends on matters including the acquisition date, business use, property classification, elections, and applicable law. Section 179 and special depreciation rules may change when eligible cost is recovered. The IRS’s Publication 946, How To Depreciate Property, explains that MACRS calculations involve the depreciation system, property class, placed-in-service date, basis, recovery period, convention, and method. Its 2025 publications are U.S. federal guidance, not advice for a specific return.
Can you deduct tractor repairs?
Generally, ordinary repairs to business property are current expenses. The IRS says, “You generally deduct the cost of repairing business property in the same way as any other business expense.” But work that is a betterment, restores the property, or adapts it to a new or different use is treated as an improvement and depreciated rather than deducted as an ordinary repair. Routine maintenance spending does not automatically reduce or restart the tractor’s tax depreciation period. Whether a particular job is a repair or an improvement depends on what the work does, so keep invoices and a clear description of the work and ask a tax professional about uncertain classifications.
Does maintenance affect a John Deere tractor’s resale value?
John Deere says that consistent upkeep and documented service history can enhance resale value for its 8R tractors. That is the manufacturer’s qualitative statement; it does not quantify the effect or provide a general depreciation curve for Deere tractors. A buyer assessing a used tractor may consider its model and year, hours, configuration, condition, service documentation, and comparable local sales.

Deere describes plan transferability, but coverage duration, service-event timing, included inspections, parts and fluids, and transfer terms are plan-specific. What records should a tractor owner keep?
Good records help support both tax treatment and a buyer’s assessment of condition. The IRS’s 2025 Publication 946 calls for supporting documents and says contemporaneous written records are preferable. Keep:
- Purchase documents and the tractor’s cost basis.
- The date it was placed in service and records of its business-use share.
- Invoices, receipts, and descriptions for maintenance, repairs, and improvements.
- Service records, including dates, hours, work performed, and parts or fluids used.
- Notes documenting the business purpose of use and relevant business-use records.
For model-specific service intervals, compatible fluids, filters, or parts, identify the exact tractor model and serial range first. John Deere provides operator and technical manuals, parts catalogs, and engine maintenance information through its Manuals and Training resource. A manual or part listing should match the tractor’s model and serial range.
