Cleese has described having good income but little capital, and later called himself “surprisingly poor”; those comments offer context, not an audited accounting of his assets and debts.
Is John Cleese’s net worth publicly known?
No. A net-worth figure would require a dated calculation of assets minus liabilities. The interviews and reporting cited here do not provide a complete balance sheet or an independent valuation of Cleese’s property, other assets, and debts. Celebrity net-worth estimates should therefore be treated as estimates, not verified facts.
Cleese’s own remarks are more limited: they describe his finances at particular moments, but do not establish a precise total or his present financial position.
What Cleese has said about his finances
2019: income but little capital
In a 2019 Canadian Press interview carried by CityNews, Cleese said, “So I have very good income, but I don’t have very good capital.” He also said touring was partly motivated by wanting to buy a home. The distinction matters: income is money received over time, while capital refers to accumulated wealth. Neither statement supplies a net-worth calculation. CityNews, 2019

2024: a move from a house to a mortgaged flat
In an interview with Saga, reported by The Independent in 2024, Cleese described moving from a mortgage-free house in Holland Park to a mortgaged flat in Sloane Square after his split from his third wife, Jennifer Wade. He called himself “surprisingly poor.” This is his description of his circumstances in that interview, not a statement of the flat’s value, mortgage balance, or his overall assets and liabilities. The Independent, 2024
2025: comments about a house, a car, and a flat
In 2025, The Independent reported Cleese saying, “I don’t have a house, I don’t have a car,” and that he had given a flat to Jennifer Wade. These reported remarks describe what he said at that time; they are not a current inventory of his assets and do not establish that he has no wealth. The Independent, 2025

What the divorce-payment figures mean
Reports from different years describe different stages or accounts of Cleese’s divorce obligations. They should not be added together or treated as interchangeable measures of his wealth.
| Source and date | What was reported | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| ABC News / AFP, 2008 | More than £1 million a year in payments he faced during the divorce proceedings | Contemporaneous reporting about interim payments, not a final settlement total or net-worth figure. ABC News, 2008 |
| Irish Independent, 2009 | A £12 million settlement, described in the article as €9.2 million in cash and assets, plus €697,000 a year for seven years | A contemporaneous account of reported settlement terms. The pound and euro amounts are reported in their original currencies and should not be silently combined. Irish Independent, 2009 |
| TIME, 2014 | Cleese described paying $20 million in alimony | A later account of Cleese’s description, not a current obligation or an asset valuation. TIME, 2014 |
| CBS News, 2015 | Cleese said, “Money is set aside. I’m through. Twenty million dollars.” | In the same interview he said the final payment was in July. His comment does not mean that the same obligation continued indefinitely. CBS News, 2015 |
The figures differ in date, currency, and context. They document reported payments or Cleese’s retrospective description of them; none calculates his net worth.

What his early television pay can—and can’t—tell you
In the 2015 CBS interview, Cleese recalled receiving £6,000 for writing and performing in the first series of Fawlty Towers, and £4,000 for the first series of Monty Python. These are his recollections of pay for early television work, not a record of his lifetime earnings or present-day wealth. CBS News, 2015

Before relying on a number published as Cleese’s net worth, check what it actually measures. A useful estimate should make clear:
Rank #4
- When it was published and what date the estimate represents.
- Whether it is a documented calculation or an unattributed estimate.
- Whether it distinguishes income from accumulated capital.
- Whether it accounts for liabilities, including mortgages, and the value of property interests.
- Whether divorce payments are historical or still owed, rather than assuming an old figure remains current.
The public comments and reports above do not disclose enough to satisfy those checks. They provide financial context, but no verified current total.
