Joby Aviation did not announce that it had received $300 million in one lump-sum stock sale. On December 10, 2024, it filed a program allowing it to sell up to $300 million of common stock over time through Morgan Stanley and Allen & Company. The 2025 passenger-service timing in the original headline was a forecast, not a confirmed launch: Joby later set 2026 as its target for initial passenger operations, and in August 2026 still described 2026 as its target.
Did Joby raise $300 million?
Not necessarily. Joby’s December 10, 2024 SEC prospectus supplement established an at-the-market (ATM) offering program with a maximum aggregate offering price of $300 million. It said the company “may offer and sell” common shares “from time to time” through or to Morgan Stanley & Co. LLC and Allen & Company LLC. That is permission to sell shares up to a ceiling—not evidence that Joby sold the full amount, received $300 million immediately, or completed a conventional underwritten stock offering. Joby’s SEC prospectus supplement
The filing used $8.53, Joby’s closing share price on December 9, 2024, as an illustration. At that price, about 35.17 million shares would have reached the $300 million ceiling. The actual number of shares—and the cash raised—would depend on the prices at which shares were sold. To establish how much Joby ultimately raised under the program, investors would need to look at subsequent company filings reporting actual sales; the ceiling and illustrative share count alone do not answer that question.
What an at-the-market offering means for investors
An ATM lets a company sell newly issued shares into the market over time, subject to the program’s terms and maximum. Unlike a single completed sale, the authorization does not establish that shares were sold on any particular date or at a particular price. If shares are issued, existing shareholders’ ownership can be diluted. The effect depends on how many shares are sold relative to the company’s outstanding shares and the price received; the $300 million cap by itself does not quantify that effect.

For an investor evaluating a headline about a large offering, distinguish three things: the maximum authorized amount, the proceeds actually received from completed sales, and the number of new shares issued. Joby’s December 2024 prospectus establishes the first, but does not by itself establish the latter two.
What was Joby’s commercial air-taxi launch date?
The “2025” date in the original framing was a company target from that period, not a confirmed start of passenger service. Joby’s 2024 Form 10-K, filed in February 2025, targeted initial passenger operations in 2025 or 2026. Its first-quarter 2025 filing then stated a 2026 target. In an August 5, 2026 shareholder letter, Joby still described first passenger operations as a 2026 target. These are company forecasts, not proof that commercial flights have begun. 2024 Form 10-K · Q1 2025 Form 10-Q · Q2 2026 shareholder letter and results

- Classic Styling: Faithful reproduction of the 1957 Chevy Bel Air with authentic taxi cab livery, roof sign, and period-correct detailing.
- Detailed Interior: Realistic dashboard, seating, and trim elements reflecting 1950s style.
- Functionality: Opening doors, hood, and trunk for interactive display.
- Quality Build: Die-cast metal body with plastic parts for precision and durability.
The available company disclosures establish that Joby continued to target 2026 as of August 2026. They do not independently confirm whether passenger service had started by October 4, 2026. A target date should therefore not be presented as an achieved launch.
What Joby plans to sell—and what its aircraft targets are
Joby’s stated business model is to manufacture, own, and operate aircraft as an app-based aerial ridesharing service. Its 2024 Form 10-K said aircraft sales to independent third parties or individual customers were not its primary business model. The investment case is therefore tied not only to building aircraft but also to establishing an operating service and the approvals and infrastructure it requires.

In its Q1 2025 filing, Joby described its piloted, all-electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft as designed for one pilot and up to four passengers, with an expected payload of up to 1,000 pounds, speeds up to 200 mph, and a target range of up to 100 miles on one charge. These are company-stated design targets, not independently validated in-service performance figures. The company also reported that initial operations with the U.S. Department of Defense began in September 2023; that is distinct from passenger air-taxi service.
What FAA certification and launch still involve
Aircraft type certification is a major milestone, but it is not the only step between development and carrying paying passengers. Joby’s November 2025 Form 10-Q described a five-stage type-certification process and said changes to its certification basis, eVTOL operating rules, or other regulatory requirements could delay certification and passenger service. It also said production and service-related authorizations would be needed in addition to aircraft certification. Joby’s Q3 2025 Form 10-Q

In a February 25, 2026 shareholder letter, Joby reported progress by stage as of February 20. The figures below are Joby’s account of progress by the company and the FAA; they are not an independent FAA determination that a stage, type certification, or service authorization has been completed. Joby noted that percentages can fluctuate as documents are edited and resubmitted. Q4 2025 shareholder letter
| Certification stage | FAA progress as reported by Joby | Joby progress |
|---|---|---|
| Stage 1 | 100% | 100% |
| Stage 2 | 97% | 97% |
| Stage 3 | 73% | 80% |
| Stage 4 | 4% | 12% |
| Stage 5 | Progress not presented | No progress reported |
Those stage figures describe certification-process progress as Joby reported it, not a simple percentage complete for the aircraft or a guarantee of when approvals will arrive. Regulatory changes, remaining certification work, production approvals, and operational readiness all affect the path to service.

What Joby reported about its fleet and launch preparations in 2026
In its August 5, 2026 Q2 letter, Joby said five electric air taxis were flying and twelve more were at various stages of production. It also said it expected its first U.S. eIPP flights in September and continued to target first passengers in 2026. These were expectations reported in the letter, not confirmation that the anticipated flights had happened. The company also described work with Atoms on transportation hubs and other commercial preparations; partnerships and infrastructure plans do not, on their own, establish certification or passenger operations. Quick Recap
How to read the financing and launch claims
- “Up to $300 million” refers to the maximum offering-program size authorized in December 2024, not necessarily the amount sold or received.
- “Launch in 2025” was an earlier company forecast. Joby’s later stated target moved to 2026.
- Certification progress figures in shareholder materials are company-reported process updates, not a substitute for regulator-issued approvals.
- Aircraft production and partnerships are relevant execution milestones, but they do not alone establish that passenger service is authorized or operating.
