Joby Aviation completed its acquisition of Blade Air Mobility’s passenger business on August 29, 2025. It did not buy Blade’s medical transportation business. The deal gives Joby an established passenger-service operation and related customer and airport relationships; the transaction’s strategic benefits are Joby’s rationale, not proof that the acquisition has already delivered them.
What did Joby buy from Blade?
Joby acquired Blade’s Passenger business: the operation that offered, sold, marketed, planned, booked, brokered, coordinated and arranged passenger transportation on aircraft operated by other entities, as well as related ground transportation. The scope is described in the parties’ August 2025 SEC filing. This was a passenger-service and coordination business, not a sale of aircraft to consumers.
When did the deal close?
The parties entered into the agreement on August 1, 2025, and completed the acquisition on August 29, 2025, according to the agreement filing and the seller’s closing filing.
How much did Joby pay?
The figures disclosed for this deal refer to different stages and accounting measures, so they should not be treated as competing estimates of one identical payment.

The closing filing describes potential additional consideration, but the cited filings do not establish final realized earnout payments.
Why did Joby want Blade’s passenger business?
Joby said the acquisition would provide immediate access to markets, an existing customer base, operating expertise, airport relationships and infrastructure in urban corridors, including New York City and Southern Europe. Its stated plan was to combine its aircraft and operating technology with Blade’s passenger-transport experience. These are the company’s strategic expectations, not independently demonstrated post-acquisition results (Joby announcement; 2025 Form 10-K).

In an August 2025 shareholder letter, Joby reported that Blade carried more than 50,000 passengers in 2024 and operated 12 urban terminals. The letter described dedicated lounge and terminal bases at JFK, Newark, Manhattan’s west and east sides, and Wall Street. These are company-reported historical operating figures, not independent estimates of total market demand (Joby’s August 2025 shareholder letter).
What remained with Blade’s former parent?
The seller retained the medical transportation business and was renamed Strata Critical Medical. A separate commercial agreement gave Joby Buyer the right, but not the obligation, to provide certain medical transportation services to the seller for eight years after closing. The closing filing also describes restrictive covenants related to short-distance and jet charter services (Strata Critical Medical’s closing filing).

What happened with the Uber app announcement?
On September 10, 2025, Joby announced a plan to bring Blade’s air mobility services to the Uber app, according to Joby’s news listing. That announcement establishes a distribution plan, not that every route or market became bookable through the app. The cited material does not verify current route availability.
