Jim Rickards has warned that stablecoins could pose a danger to the bond market and, according to October 2026 coverage, forecast that gold could reach $10,000 by mid-2027. These are Rickards’s views as reported by ChainCatcher—not a verified interview transcript, a market consensus, or a guaranteed outcome. The underlying concern about stablecoins and short-term government debt has a documented market connection, but that alone does not prove they threaten the broader bond market.
What Rickards reportedly said
A Bitcoin Magazine video listing dated October 5, 2026, framed its discussion around why Rickards calls stablecoins “the most dangerous thing in the world.” The listing page could not be opened to verify the full interview or the phrase’s surrounding context. Bitcoin Magazine’s listing therefore establishes the topic and date, but not a transcript.
In an October 6, 2026, report, ChainCatcher attributed to Rickards a warning that stablecoins pose a danger to the bond market and a forecast that gold may reach $10,000 by mid-2027. ChainCatcher’s account is secondary reporting; the forecast should be understood as Rickards’s outlook, not an independently validated target.
Why stablecoins can matter to government bonds
The link is through reserves. Stablecoin issuers may hold short-term government debt among the assets that support their tokens. The International Monetary Fund’s October 2025 Global Financial Stability Report says issuers already hold significant volumes of short-term government debt and are among its largest buyers. The IMF report says further growth could create new demand for short-term sovereign bonds or shift demand that would otherwise come from other buyers.

- ✔️Reverse: The Type 1 reverse, used from 1986-2021, shows a male bald eagle in flight carrying an olive branch to his nest, where a female awaits with her young. The Type 2 reverse, introduced in 2021, shows a bold close-up portrait of an eagle.

Those are two different market effects. If stablecoin issuers buy additional bonds, their purchases can add to demand. If they instead replace other investors as buyers, ownership shifts without necessarily adding the same amount of net demand. The IMF passage establishes this connection and the possibility of either effect; it does not establish that stablecoins are dangerous to the entire bond market.
What the bond-market warning does—and does not—establish
Rickards’s warning is a judgment about risk. The evidence cited here supports a narrower point: stablecoin issuers have become significant buyers of short-term government debt, so changes in their reserves or activity could affect that part of the market. It does not quantify the exposure, show that issuers are destabilizing bond prices, or establish the consequences of a sudden change in stablecoin demand.

The distinction matters for readers assessing the claim: the IMF describes a market channel, while the claim that stablecoins are “dangerous” is Rickards’s characterization as reported by ChainCatcher. Neither the video listing nor the secondary report provides a verified transcript or enough detail to test his full argument.

ChainCatcher reports that Rickards expects gold to reach $10,000 by mid-2027. That is a forecast with a stated target and timing, not a promise that gold will reach that price or a recommendation to buy it. The cited coverage does not provide evidence that independently validates the target.

For a personal-finance decision, a single forecast cannot establish whether gold fits a person’s goals, time horizon, or ability to tolerate price changes. It also does not, by itself, account for the costs or practical considerations involved in owning physical gold, such as premiums, storage, and liquidity.
