Were JFK refuelers actually going on strike over Memorial Day weekend?
They planned to walk out on Friday, May 24, 2024, ahead of Memorial Day weekend, according to contemporary reporting. A later report published May 23 said the planned walkout had been averted after New York Gov. Kathy Hochul intervened and Teamsters Local 553 and Allied Aviation Services reached a tentative agreement (May 23 report).
That distinction matters: the headline described a threat, not a confirmed strike. The available sources do not establish that the workers walked out or that this dispute caused flight delays.
Who was involved, and what work was at stake?
The May 2024 report described about 300 workers and mechanics represented by Teamsters Local 553 who fueled commercial and cargo jets at John F. Kennedy International Airport. A contemporary report attributed to the union the claim that Allied Aviation was JFK’s sole fuel service provider. That was the union’s characterization, not independently verified exclusivity in the available reporting.

Because the workers performed aircraft fueling, a walkout had the potential to disrupt an important airport operation. The sources do not quantify how many flights might have been affected, however, and do not document actual disruption from this threatened action.
Why were JFK refuelers threatening to strike?
The contemporary report said the workers had been without a collective bargaining agreement since June 30, 2023. It described the dispute as involving both the union’s right to strike and disagreement over whether the National Labor Relations Board or the National Mediation Board had jurisdiction. Teamsters Local 553 secretary-treasurer Demos Demopoulos stated the union’s position this way: “We will never give up the right to strike and fight for our members, a right granted to us by the National Labor Relations Act.” That is the union official’s statement, not an independent legal finding.
Was the JFK fuel workers’ strike called off?
Yes, the May 23, 2024 report said a tentative agreement between the union and Allied Aviation Services averted the planned walkout after Gov. Hochul intervened. Demopoulos said at the time: “We are happy an agreement has been reached, a need for a strike averted, and we are hopeful that the deal will be ratified by our members.” His statement confirmed the union’s hope for ratification, not that ratification had already occurred.

A separate National Labor Relations Board case page records a March 2026 vote for a JFK supervisory unit with 38 eligible voters. The defined unit included fueling supervisors, dispatchers, operations supervisors, maintenance supervisors, and tank farm supervisors; the tally was 11 votes for the union and 7 against, and the case page shows the matter as open.
