Page Six reported that playwright Jeremy O. Harris confronted OpenAI CEO Sam Altman at a Vanity Fair after-Oscars party over OpenAI’s reported agreement with the U.S. Department of Defense. The report said Harris first compared Altman to Joseph Goebbels, then told Page Six he had meant the German industrialist Friedrich Flick. The account has not been independently established by a public recording or a named eyewitness account in the coverage available here.
What was reportedly said at the party?
Page Six reported on March 17, 2026, that Harris approached Altman at a Vanity Fair after-Oscars gathering and criticized him over OpenAI’s Pentagon relationship. Futurism summarized the report the next day. The event was an industry party after the Academy Awards, not an exchange at the awards ceremony itself.
According to the account, Harris initially called Altman the “Goebbels of the Trump administration.” Harris later emailed Page Six that he had been drinking martinis and had used the wrong historical comparison: he said he meant Friedrich Flick. That correction changes the reference, but it does not establish the exact words spoken or the full exchange.
Goebbels was Nazi Germany’s propaganda minister. Flick was a German industrialist whose business empire supplied the Nazi regime; he was convicted of war crimes at the Nuremberg Trials in a case involving forced labor. These are distinct historical figures. Harris’s reported remarks were comparisons, not evidence that Altman was a Nazi official or had committed war crimes.

What was Altman’s reported response?
Sources cited by Page Six described Altman’s response as calm. The available coverage does not provide a direct statement from Altman about the encounter, identify a named eyewitness, or establish that the exchange was recorded. Who is Jeremy O. Harris?
Harris is a playwright and screenwriter, best known as the author of Slave Play, which won a Tony Award, and a co-writer of the film Zola. His presence at a high-profile entertainment-industry party made the reported exchange notable, but there is no basis for treating his comments as a statement on behalf of Hollywood or other attendees.

Why was OpenAI’s Pentagon agreement controversial?
Futurism reported that OpenAI announced an agreement with the U.S. Department of Defense in late February 2026 to deploy its AI systems across the military. The article did not provide the contract, its value, procurement terms, deployment scope, or official text. Those missing details matter: an agreement to supply technology does not by itself establish which models or military functions are covered, or whether a system is used for administration, logistics, intelligence, cyber operations, or weapons-related tasks.
Futurism also reported that OpenAI later emphasized restrictions concerning autonomous weapons without humans in the loop and mass surveillance of U.S. citizens. Without the agreement’s language, it is not possible to determine whether these limits are contractual obligations, company policy, or public assurances—or how they would be monitored and enforced. The reporting also does not establish that the deal authorized autonomous weapons, unrestricted military access, or any particular operational use.

How did the agreement fit into the wider AI debate?
The coverage contrasted OpenAI’s reported arrangement with Anthropic’s reported resistance to broader military access to its systems. It also described threats from the administration, including possible seizure of Anthropic’s technology. These claims are attributed to Futurism’s account; the material available here does not include underlying government documents or direct official statements that would independently establish their terms.
The disagreement illustrates a wider policy question: what limits should AI companies place on government and military use of their systems, and how should those limits be written, verified, and enforced? A public commitment against a category of use is not necessarily equivalent to a contract clause with defined oversight and remedies.

Futurism described several developments surrounding the agreement: Altman apologized for the deal being “rushed,” defended military collaboration at an internal all-hands meeting, and OpenAI executive Caitlin Kalinowski later left the company, criticizing the deal’s guardrails as insufficiently defined. The coverage does not establish that the party confrontation caused Kalinowski’s departure, or that each development followed the others on a precise timeline.

Its account of the party confrontation rests principally on Page Six’s report from March 17, including unnamed sources for Altman’s response and Harris’s reported email correction. Accordingly, the careful description is that Page Six reported a confrontation and attributed the historical comparisons to Harris, who later said he had meant Flick rather than Goebbels. The reporting makes the encounter a news story, but it does not establish every detail as independently confirmed fact.
