Why does Dale’s CEO appointment not mean he owns the club?
Birmingham City announced Dale’s appointment as CEO in June 2025, effective immediately. A CEO is an executive role; the appointment announcement does not say that he owns the club or is acquiring it. The club’s announcement describes his appointment.
What ownership change was completed in 2025?
BBC Sport reported on 7 November 2025 that Shelby Companies Limited, a Knighthead affiliate, completed its purchase of the remaining shares. The report put Shelby’s holding at 96.64% of Birmingham City Limited, the parent company that owns the football club. Do company filings show a new takeover?
The Companies House filing history for Birmingham City Football Club Limited includes later filings, such as a 2026 confirmation statement and charge registration. Those entries do not establish a new takeover. A filing-history page also cannot rule out private discussions or, by itself, establish the current beneficial ownership of every related entity. What approvals would a future change of control require?
The EFL describes a takeover formally as an acquisition of control and says it is subject to EFL and Independent Football Regulator requirements. Its guidance says the ODSE regime began on 5 May 2026 and sets out approval, notification and assessment requirements for owners and specified senior roles. What would confirm a credible new bid?
There are no substantiated competing offers to compare. If a proposal emerges, the useful evidence would be:
- Who the bidder is and how the purchase would be funded.
- What stake or control the bidder is seeking.
- Any published terms, conditions or exclusivity arrangement.
- Whether the club or bidder confirms the proposal, and its regulatory status.
Until such evidence appears, Dale’s past involvement and present executive role should not be treated as proof of a takeover.
