JEPI is oriented to the S&P 500; JEPQ is oriented to the Nasdaq-100. Both seek monthly income using an actively managed equity portfolio and an options overlay involving equity-linked notes (ELNs). The better fit depends first on which equity exposure you want, and then on whether you accept the overlay’s trade-off: potential option income in exchange for some upside participation, without protection from falling markets.
Neither fund promises a fixed payment or is automatically the better choice because of a recent distribution. Their distributions can vary, and the available figures here do not establish a same-date yield, cost, return, or volatility winner.

What is the main difference between JEPI and JEPQ?
The primary difference is the equity market each fund is designed to track in broad terms. JEPI targets S&P 500 equity exposure, while JEPQ targets Nasdaq-100 equity exposure. Their shared monthly-income objective and options overlay do not make these benchmarks interchangeable.
| Feature | JEPI | JEPQ |
|---|---|---|
| Equity exposure orientation | S&P 500 | Nasdaq-100 |
| Stated income objective | Seeks monthly income | Seeks monthly income |
| Options structure | ELNs with embedded short-call exposure | ELNs with embedded short-call exposure |
| Fixed monthly payment promised? | No | No |
JPMorgan describes each fund as combining an active equity portfolio with an options strategy intended to seek monthly distributable income. The benchmark orientation is the starting point for comparing them: consider whether you want S&P 500-oriented exposure or Nasdaq-100-oriented exposure before comparing any distribution figures.

That distinction answers the basic question, “What is the difference between JEPI and JEPQ?” Their income objective and options structure are similar, but the equity exposure they are oriented toward differs. A preference for one benchmark over the other is a portfolio decision, not evidence that one fund is inherently better. The right comparison begins by identifying what exposure you already own, what exposure you want, and what role a new holding would play.
Benchmark orientation should not be mistaken for a promise to replicate an index exactly. JPMorgan describes the funds as actively managed equity portfolios with an options overlay. The orientation is useful for understanding the broad market exposure, but it does not guarantee matching index performance, a particular return, or a specific risk level.
How the shared options strategy works
Both funds use an options overlay through ELNs. The SEC filing describes short call positions embedded in the notes; JPMorgan describes the broader strategy as combining active equity portfolios with out-of-the-money call index options. In plain terms, the strategy seeks income from writing call-option exposure while the fund also holds an equity portfolio.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →A call option gives its buyer the right to benefit if an underlying asset rises above a specified level. A short call position can therefore limit participation in a sharp rise above the relevant call exposure. The options income is not free: the strategy may give up some gains in a strong market. Meanwhile, the equity portfolio remains exposed to market declines.
- Potential benefit: option premiums may contribute to distributable income.
- Trade-off: the short-call exposure can limit some upside participation.
- What it does not do: it does not eliminate equity-market losses or turn the funds into cash substitutes.
The overlay should be evaluated as part of the overall exposure, not as a guarantee that a payment will offset losses. An income-seeking strategy can still lose value when its equity exposure falls, and a call-writing strategy may lag an otherwise comparable equity exposure during a strong rally.
The mechanics also explain why an investor should not compare the funds with an ordinary equity holding solely by looking at cash paid out. A payment is one part of the fund experience; it does not say on its own how the portfolio value changed, how much upside was surrendered, or how much risk remains. The strategy seeks enhanced monthly distributable income, but that objective does not create a floor under the share price.
ELNs are the vehicle through which the short-call exposure is embedded, so the structure adds a layer to understand beyond “the fund writes calls.” The notes can be hard to sell or value, and the fund faces credit or counterparty exposure related to them. That does not mean a loss will occur, but it does mean the risks are not limited to the day-to-day movement of the equity market. Investors should consider both the portfolio’s market exposure and the note structure.
Are JEPI or JEPQ distributions guaranteed?
No. The SEC-filed prospectus says the fund seeks, under normal circumstances, to provide monthly distributions at a relatively stable level. That is an objective, not a promise of a particular amount or an assurance that payments will continue unchanged. The amount can vary, and a monthly schedule does not make the cash flow fixed.
JPMorgan also cautions that its 30-day yield is an estimate and may not equal the fund’s actual investment income distribution rate. A yield figure and the cash distribution an investor receives are not necessarily the same measure. Avoid treating one recent payment, multiplied over a year, as a guaranteed annual yield.

A meaningful numerical comparison requires the latest official materials for both funds, taken on the same date. Check what each number measures—such as a 30-day yield, a distribution rate, or actual payments over a period—and use matching periods. The available figures do not establish a current yield or performance winner, so this comparison does not rank the funds on those measures.
For context, the SEC-filed J.P. Morgan Exchange-Traded Fund Trust prospectus characterizes the monthly distribution as something the fund “seeks, under normal circumstances” to provide at a relatively stable level. The qualifiers matter: “seeks” describes an aim, “under normal circumstances” is not an unconditional guarantee, and “relatively stable” does not mean identical payments. The prospectus language should not be converted into a promise of fixed income.

When reviewing distribution data, keep three ideas separate. A distribution is the cash amount declared or paid for a period. A distribution rate is a calculation based on payments and a reference share price, and can change as either changes. A 30-day yield is a different estimate; JPMorgan specifically cautions that it may not equal actual investment income distributions. These measures answer different questions, so a higher-looking figure is not automatically evidence of more dependable cash flow or a better investment.
Investors considering these funds to support spending should think about whether their plan can withstand variable payments and a falling share value. A recent payment is historical, not a reliable forecast. If a specific amount is essential for a monthly budget, the funds’ income objective alone does not establish that the amount will be available in future months.
What risks should you compare beyond the benchmark?
Equity-market risk
Each fund has equity exposure, and its value can fall when the relevant holdings or market segment decline. The option overlay does not remove this exposure. The practical question is whether the fund’s benchmark orientation fits the role you want it to play, including the possibility of losses.
Consider this separately from the income question. Someone who prefers one benchmark’s broad exposure still needs to decide whether the possibility of a decline is tolerable. Option premiums may contribute income, but the strategy does not guarantee that premiums will offset a market fall. Nor does it make either fund a substitute for cash or a fixed-income holding.

ELNs introduce risks in addition to ordinary market movements. Issuer fact sheets identify liquidity risk and credit or counterparty risk. A note may be difficult to sell or value, and the fund can be exposed to the ability of the note issuer or counterparty to meet its obligations.
JEPQ’s fact sheet warns that unexpected movements in the underlying instruments may prevent the fund from realizing anticipated benefits and can lead to significant losses, potentially including the entire principal invested in an ELN. That is a stated risk of the ELN investment; it should not be misread as a prediction that the entire fund will lose all of its value.
This distinction matters when reading risk language. The possibility of losing the principal in an ELN refers to the investment in that note, not a forecast of total-fund loss. At the same time, it should not be ignored simply because the notes are held within an ETF. Fund structure does not make issuer, counterparty, valuation, or liquidity risks disappear.

Upside trade-off
The short-call component can limit some participation in a sharp rise above the relevant call exposure. Investors who prioritize capturing the full gains of a rising market should weigh that trade-off against the strategy’s income objective. There is no basis here to claim that either fund will outperform the other in a particular market environment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe trade-off is not a fixed percentage that can be assumed in every market. The available information does not establish a specific ceiling on returns, nor does it support a forecast about how either strategy will behave over a future period. The practical takeaway is narrower: short-call exposure can reduce participation in some market gains, while the equity exposure still leaves the fund exposed to losses.
Distribution variability
A monthly income objective does not guarantee a stable amount. Do not build a budget around an assumption that future payments will match a recent one. If you need a specific level of dependable cash flow, the funds’ objectives alone do not establish that they will provide it.
Monthly payment frequency can be attractive for investors seeking recurring cash flow, but it is not the same as a contractual payment schedule. Check the latest fund statements and distribution announcements rather than assuming that the next payment will match the last one. A payment history can inform expectations, but it cannot turn future distributions into a guarantee.
Costs and changing fund information
Do not assume one fund is cheaper based on a figure from a different date or an incomplete comparison. The current official materials should be checked for expense ratios and other relevant costs alongside distribution and performance information. The figures available for this comparison do not establish a complete, same-date expense-ratio set for JEPI and JEPQ, so there is no supported cost winner to name here.
Recommended Free Tools
Costs matter because they affect an investor’s net experience, but a cost comparison is only useful when the figures are current and defined consistently. Also distinguish a fund’s stated operating expenses from other potential costs of buying, holding, or selling shares, which can depend on the investor’s account and trading arrangements. No specific brokerage fee or transaction cost is established here; verify applicable costs with the provider and current fund disclosures.
How to decide which fund fits your portfolio
Start with the exposure you want, not the largest recent payment. Then assess whether the shared strategy and its risks suit your intended portfolio role.
- Choose the equity orientation. If your intended exposure is S&P 500-oriented, JEPI is the closer match by design. If you want Nasdaq-100-oriented exposure, JEPQ is the closer match. This describes their orientation, not a guarantee of exact benchmark tracking or future results.
- Decide whether the overlay fits your objective. Consider whether seeking monthly distributable income while accepting potentially limited upside participation makes sense for your plan. If full participation in a rising market is more important, the short-call trade-off deserves particular attention.
- Check your ability to tolerate losses. Ask whether you can withstand declines in the underlying equity exposure and the additional liquidity and credit or counterparty risks associated with ELNs. Income distributions do not cancel those risks.
- Set realistic cash-flow expectations. Treat monthly distributions as variable rather than promised. For any comparison, use the same measurement date and distinguish an estimated yield from the cash distributions actually paid.
- Review the fund documents and tax setting. Consult current official fund materials for the investment details and tax documents relevant to the period you are considering. The right choice can depend on your own account type and circumstances.
It can help to make this sequence explicit rather than starting with a yield table. First ask whether you would choose S&P 500-oriented or Nasdaq-100-oriented exposure even without the income overlay. Next decide whether the overlay’s trade-off is acceptable. Only then compare current distribution information and costs, using figures from matching dates and definitions. This order reduces the chance of letting a recent payment obscure the portfolio exposure and risks you are actually taking.
For a household already holding substantial exposure to one of these broad equity orientations, adding a fund with a similar orientation may increase rather than diversify that exposure. The right assessment depends on the full portfolio; the fund names alone do not establish how much overlap or concentration a particular investor has. Review current holdings and your existing positions rather than assuming either ETF automatically diversifies a portfolio.

Which fund might fit which investor?
| If your priority is… | What to examine |
|---|---|
| S&P 500-oriented equity exposure | JEPI’s stated benchmark orientation, alongside the shared options and ELN risks. |
| Nasdaq-100-oriented equity exposure | JEPQ’s stated benchmark orientation, alongside the shared options and ELN risks. |
| Monthly income as an objective | Either fund may merit consideration, but neither promises a fixed payment; examine current distributions and yield definitions rather than assuming stability. |
| Maximum participation in a sharp market rise | Assess whether the short-call overlay’s potential upside limitation fits your expectations. |
| Lower exposure to equity or issuer-related risk | Neither fund’s income objective removes market exposure or ELN liquidity and credit/counterparty risks. |
“Which is better, JEPI or JEPQ?” has no universal answer. If an investor wants S&P 500-oriented exposure and is comfortable with the shared overlay, JEPI is the closer match to that stated preference. If the intended exposure is Nasdaq-100-oriented, JEPQ is the closer match. That is a fit comparison, not a claim about which has better returns, a higher dependable yield, lower volatility, or lower costs.
An investor who values full participation in a sharp rally may decide that the short-call trade-off is not suitable, regardless of which benchmark they prefer. Someone who cannot tolerate equity losses or the additional ELN risks may find that neither fund meets the need. A monthly income objective does not make either fund appropriate for every income-focused portfolio.
This framework does not identify a universal winner. The two funds share important structural features but start from different equity exposures. If neither benchmark orientation or the overlay fits your plan, choosing between them may not solve the underlying portfolio question.

JPMorgan Asset Management reported 108 holdings for JEPQ in a fact-sheet snapshot dated March 31, 2026. That count is a point-in-time characteristic, not a permanent feature of the fund, and it does not by itself establish diversification, risk, or suitability.

A sound comparison of expenses, yields, returns, or volatility needs current, comparable official figures. The available information does not provide a complete same-date set for both funds across those measures. Do not combine figures from different dates or periods, or infer a future return from a distribution rate. Holdings, yields, expenses, distributions, and performance can change.
The holdings count is a useful reminder to date-stamp facts that can change. It should not be treated as a measure of how safe or diversified the fund is, and it should not be compared with an undated holdings figure for JEPI. For portfolio decisions, use the latest full holdings information and consider what the securities represent in relation to positions you already own. A count alone cannot answer those questions.
Likewise, a past return does not settle which fund fits an investor now. Any performance comparison should state the period, date, and whether the figure is a total return or another measure; it should use matching timeframes and the latest official materials. No comparable current performance or volatility winner is established here.
How taxes may affect the decision
Fund distributions may be taxed as ordinary income or capital gains, and tax treatment can differ when shares are held in tax-advantaged accounts. The character of a distribution depends on the actual distribution and the investor’s circumstances; it is not accurate to assume every payment from either fund receives one fixed tax treatment.

Tax treatment is another reason not to infer an after-tax outcome from a headline distribution figure. Two investors may have different account types and tax circumstances, and the character of actual distributions may vary. A fund’s stated income objective does not tell an individual what their after-tax cash flow will be.
A practical final check before investing
- Confirm that the S&P 500 or Nasdaq-100 orientation matches the exposure you want.
- Read current fund materials for the latest holdings, expenses, distributions, and strategy details.
- Compare income figures only when their dates and definitions match.
- Understand that short-call exposure can limit some upside, while equity exposure and ELN risks remain.
- Consider whether variable distributions and potential losses fit your cash-flow needs and risk tolerance.
Before making a decision, verify that you are looking at current documents. JPMorgan’s fact sheets and strategy materials can change, and the SEC-filed prospectus may be supplemented. Check the latest prospectus and fund disclosures for updated strategy, risk, and fee information, then compare both funds on the same date. The March 31, 2026 JEPQ holdings count and other dated figures should be treated as snapshots, not current facts indefinitely.
If a comparison still seems to turn entirely on which fund has the larger recent distribution, pause and revisit the question. The distribution is not guaranteed, the 30-day yield is an estimate, and the overlay may trade some upside for option income. Benchmark preference, ability to tolerate market and ELN risks, cash-flow flexibility, costs, and tax circumstances all belong in the decision.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which is better, JEPI or JEPQ?
Neither is universally better. JEPI is oriented to S&P 500 equity exposure, while JEPQ is oriented to Nasdaq-100 exposure. Both seek monthly income through an options overlay involving ELNs, with potential upside limitations and risks that remain. Choose based on the exposure and portfolio role you want, not an unsupported assumption that one has better future returns or guaranteed income.
What is the difference between JEPI and JEPQ?
Their main difference is benchmark orientation: JEPI targets S&P 500-oriented exposure and JEPQ targets Nasdaq-100-oriented exposure. Both seek monthly income and use ELNs with embedded short-call exposure. The shared strategy does not make their underlying equity exposures interchangeable.
Do JEPI and JEPQ pay a fixed monthly dividend?
No. The prospectus describes a goal of monthly distributions at a relatively stable level under normal circumstances, not a guaranteed amount. Distributions can vary, and JPMorgan cautions that a 30-day yield estimate may not equal actual investment income distributions.
Does the covered-call strategy protect JEPI or JEPQ from market losses?
No. The option overlay may contribute premiums to distributable income and can limit some upside participation, but the equity portfolio remains exposed to falling markets. ELNs also add liquidity and credit or counterparty risks.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →How should I compare JEPI and JEPQ yields?
Use the latest official data for both funds from the same date, and identify whether each figure is a 30-day yield, a distribution rate, or actual payments over a period. Those measures are not interchangeable, and a recent payment should not be annualized as guaranteed income.
Can I lose my entire investment in an ELN held by JEPQ?
JEPQ’s fact sheet warns that losses on an ELN investment could potentially include the entire principal invested in that note. This is a risk statement about the ELN investment, not a prediction that the entire JEPQ fund will lose all of its value.
Are JEPI and JEPQ distributions taxed the same way for everyone?
No single tax treatment applies to every distribution or investor. Distributions may be taxed as ordinary income or capital gains, and treatment can differ in tax-advantaged accounts. Check current tax documents and consult a qualified tax professional about personal circumstances.
The Bottom Line
JEPI is the closer match for investors seeking S&P 500-oriented exposure; JEPQ is the closer match for Nasdaq-100-oriented exposure. Both seek monthly income through an ELN-based short-call overlay, but neither guarantees a fixed distribution or removes equity and note-related risks. Compare current, same-date official figures and choose according to your desired exposure, risk tolerance, cash-flow needs, costs, and tax circumstances—not a recent distribution alone.
