Jeff D’Onofrio became acting publisher and CEO of The Washington Post in February 2026, after Will Lewis left the role. The Post later made the appointment permanent: on September 9, 2026, it announced that D’Onofrio would serve as publisher and CEO. He had joined the paper as CFO in June 2025, following executive roles at Raptive and Tumblr.
Why Jeff D’Onofrio became acting CEO
D’Onofrio stepped into the acting publisher and CEO role in February 2026 after Will Lewis left. The interim appointment was a change in leadership at The Washington Post, where D’Onofrio was already serving as chief financial officer. The Post’s September 9, 2026 announcement says owner Jeff Bezos later named him publisher and CEO after seven months in an interim capacity.
His appointment is now permanent
The title “acting CEO” describes D’Onofrio’s February 2026 appointment, not his current role as of the Post’s September 9 announcement. He was named publisher and CEO after serving in the interim position for seven months.
Bezos said of the permanent appointment: “Jeff has led with discipline and care — following the data and sweating the details, and he has my complete confidence as we chart our future,” according to The Post.

What D’Onofrio did before leading The Post
D’Onofrio joined The Washington Post as CFO in June 2025. Before that, he was CFO at Raptive and, immediately before Raptive, CEO of Tumblr. The Post’s June 12, 2025 announcement of his CFO appointment also lists management roles at Google, Zagat, Yahoo, and MLB Advanced Media.
When he joined as CFO, D’Onofrio described himself as a longtime reader of the paper, saying it was an honor to join “this world-class news organization at such a pivotal time.”
