The original story was published in 2024; later SEC filings document a separate open-market sale in August 2026 and a gift disposition that month. Those records show what happened to shares, but they do not establish why Bezos sold or gifted them, or what tax he paid.
What the 2024 story covered
GeekWire’s 2024 report connected Bezos’s announced move from Washington to Miami with public discussion of his Amazon stock sales and Washington’s capital-gains tax. The report described the tax as 7% above a $262,000 threshold in that historical context. Those figures are attributed to the 2024 article, not presented here as current Washington law. The 2026 filings below are later developments, not transactions reported as part of the 2024 move announcement. The records do not establish Bezos’s tax residence for each transaction, how much tax he paid or avoided, or whether the move caused any particular sale.

What “up to 15 million shares” means
Amazon’s 2025 annual report says Bezos adopted a Rule 10b5-1(c) plan permitting sales of up to 15,000,000 shares through February 26, 2027, subject to conditions. “Up to” sets the plan’s ceiling; it is not evidence that 15 million shares have been sold. Amazon 2025 annual report
Amazon’s 2023 annual report also disclosed an earlier plan, adopted November 8, 2023, covering up to 50,000,000 shares and ending January 31, 2025, subject to conditions. That historical plan is not active now. Amazon 2023 annual report

What the records can—and cannot—answer
Why is Jeff Bezos selling Amazon stock?
The August 2026 Form 4 documents a sale but does not state a reason. A sale alone does not establish a view about Amazon’s future, insider knowledge, or a particular personal or financial motive.
Did the move to Florida affect the tax on his stock sales?
The sources cited here do not establish Bezos’s tax residence when any specific shares were sold, whether he owed Washington tax on a transaction, or any tax saved or paid. The 2024 GeekWire article’s rate and threshold provide historical context only; they are not a basis for calculating a current or individual tax outcome.

Why distinguish a sale from a gift?
SEC transaction codes matter. The August 3 transaction is coded S and reported as an open-market sale. The August 25 transaction is coded G and reported as a gift disposition. Counting both as stock “sales” would misstate what the filings say.
