Jeff Bezos said it took more than 50 meetings to raise $1 million from investors for Amazon. In other interviews, he recalled meeting over 60 people or described the total as 60 meetings. He also said the financing meant giving up 20% of the company—a striking early trade of ownership for startup capital.
What Bezos said about raising Amazon’s first $1 million
In a July 2020 statement to the U.S. House Committee on the Judiciary, Bezos recalled: “It took more than 50 meetings for me to raise $1 million from investors, and over the course of all those meetings, the most common question was, ‘What’s the internet?’” Read his statement to the House committee.
That statement establishes a lower bound, not an exact count of 60. In a 2004 interview with Inc., Bezos said he met “over 60 people” and raised the money from about 22 angel investors; the process took several months to close. Inc.’s interview gives that earlier account. A later DealBook Summit interview transcript recounts 60 meetings, 22 angel investors, and the equity terms. Read the DealBook transcript.
How much of Amazon did the investors receive?
In the DealBook account, Bezos described raising the $1 million in seed capital by selling 20% of the company at a $5 million valuation. GeekWire’s 2013 report of a 60 Minutes interview also says Bezos gave up 20% for $1 million. GeekWire’s report provides that corroborating account.

The $5 million figure is the valuation associated with the deal in the DealBook account, not a statement of what Amazon was worth later. The House statement confirms the $1 million raise but does not specify the 20% equity stake.
Why accounts give different meeting counts
The figures should not be collapsed into a single audited tally. Bezos’s congressional statement says “more than 50”; his Inc. recollection says “over 60 people”; and the DealBook transcript gives 60 meetings. The accounts are broadly consistent that fundraising required dozens of conversations, but they differ in precision and wording.

The investor count is approximate in the Inc. interview (“about 22”) and stated as 22 in the DealBook transcript. These are Bezos’s historical recollections as reported in interviews and a congressional statement, not independently audited transaction records.

The most vivid detail is the question Bezos says investors asked most often: “What’s the internet?” His statement gives no count of how often it came up. Together, the accounts show an early fundraising effort that took months, involved roughly 22 angel investors, and required many meetings while the internet was still unfamiliar to prospective backers.

The available accounts do not establish each investor’s return, Amazon’s final dilution from the financing, the precise closing dates, or whether every meeting was with a prospective investor. For a broader narrative of Amazon’s early history, Brad Stone’s The Everything Store is relevant further reading; its description also recounts Bezos canvassing sixty potential investors for $1 million.
