Jeff Bezos overtook Elon Musk on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index on March 4, 2024, according to reports published at the time. The index put Bezos’s estimated wealth at $200.3 billion and Musk’s at $197.7 billion, though another contemporary report rounded the figures to $200 billion and $198 billion. The lead did not last: later reported index data put Musk back in first place.
When did Jeff Bezos overtake Elon Musk?
Bezos moved into first place on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index on March 4, 2024. RetailWire reported the index’s estimates as $200.3 billion for Bezos and $197.7 billion for Musk. The Independent, in an article published March 5, gave rounded estimates of $200 billion and $198 billion, respectively.
These figures describe estimates on a wealth ranking, not audited cash balances. The difference in precision reflects how the reports presented the estimates; both said Bezos had moved ahead.
Why did Bezos move ahead?
Contemporary coverage linked the change to weakness in Tesla shares. RetailWire reported that Tesla stock fell 7.2% in the relevant session after vehicle shipments in China declined. The Independent also noted recent Tesla share weakness and reported that Bezos held about 9% of Amazon, citing a February 2024 Form 4 filing.

Those details provide market context, not a complete calculation of either person’s wealth. A billionaire ranking estimates the value of assets and can change as share prices move; the reports do not establish that Tesla’s decline alone explains the full change in the two estimates.
Is Jeff Bezos still the world’s richest person?
No—not in the later snapshot available here. A September 16, 2026 report by The Indian Express, reproducing Bloomberg Billionaires Index data, listed Elon Musk first at an estimated $892 billion and Jeff Bezos third at $274 billion. Those are figures from that dated snapshot, not a live ranking for October 2026. The report describes Bloomberg’s index as revaluing after each New York market close, so a ranking should always be read with its date.

How to read billionaire rankings
“World’s richest person” in this story means the person listed first by a particular index at a particular time. It does not mean the person has that amount of spendable money in a bank account, and it is not a permanent title. Rankings can differ when publishers use different valuation methods, asset estimates, or snapshot times; the reports cited here establish Bloomberg attribution and dates but do not provide enough detail for a technical comparison of competing trackers.
