That gives Bezos a formal place in Amazon’s leadership, but Amazon’s governance guidelines assign company control and direction to the board—not unilaterally to the Executive Chair. The public sources cited here establish Bezos’s title and his stated plans at the 2021 transition; they do not quantify his current informal influence or show that he directs particular operating decisions.
What is Bezos’s role at Amazon now?
Amazon’s current Officers and Directors listing identifies Jeff Bezos as Executive Chair and Andy Jassy as President and CEO. Amazon announced in February 2021 that Bezos would move into the Executive Chair role and Jassy would become CEO in the third quarter of that year. The current listing reflects that transition.
Bezos therefore no longer holds the CEO job. His Executive Chair title keeps him in a formal leadership position, but the title alone does not establish which operating decisions he can make or how much influence he exercises day to day.
Who has formal authority over Amazon?
Amazon’s governance guidelines say the board of directors is responsible for the company’s control and direction. They do not describe a unilateral power attached to the Executive Chair title.

The guidelines also call for a majority of directors to be independent. A lead director presides over independent directors’ sessions, chairs board meetings when the chair is absent, and works with management and independent directors on agendas and materials. The board and its Leadership Development and Compensation Committee review succession planning at least annually, including CEO succession. These provisions describe board oversight; they do not specify the extent of Bezos’s personal influence within it.
What did Bezos say he would do after leaving the CEO role?
In his 2021 transition email, reproduced by Amazon, Bezos said: “In the Exec Chair role, I intend to focus my energies and attention on new products and early initiatives.” He also wrote that he would stay engaged in important Amazon initiatives. Those are statements of intent made at the time of the transition, not evidence of his current schedule, activities, or involvement in particular decisions.

How much informal influence does Bezos have?
A formal title and a stated intention to remain engaged do not, by themselves, answer how much influence Bezos has over Amazon today. The official leadership and governance sources cited above do not quantify that influence or document specific current interventions in strategy or operations. A firmer conclusion would require dated reporting on his participation in decisions, access to Amazon’s leadership, or role in shaping strategy.
Amazon’s biography notes that Bezos founded Blue Origin and owns The Washington Post. Those roles provide context about his other affiliations, but they do not establish how he divides his time or how much power he exercises at Amazon.

What the transition announcement’s financial figure means
Amazon’s February 2, 2021 transition announcement reported $386.1 billion in net sales for 2020. That is a historical company figure, not a current measure of Amazon’s size or a measure of Bezos’s influence.
