On September 25, 2023, Smith told employees he was “stepping aside” as chief executive. Blue Origin named Dave Limp, then a senior Amazon executive, as his replacement. “Got rid of” is a provocative interpretation—famously used in an Ars Technica headline—rather than a verified account of the employment decision.
What happened on September 25, 2023?
Smith announced his departure in a company-wide message after roughly six years as Blue Origin’s CEO. His wording described the move as stepping aside, while contemporary reporting described it as a resignation. Blue Origin simultaneously identified Dave Limp as the incoming CEO, as reported by The Washington Post.
Smith’s message emphasized how much Blue Origin had expanded during his tenure, including its workforce, facilities and sales orders. That record matters because his exit was not an announcement that the company had accomplished nothing; it was a leadership change at a company that had grown while facing persistent execution criticism.
Who Bob Smith was—and was not
Smith was a hired chief executive, not Blue Origin’s founder. Jeff Bezos founded the company, whose stated mission is to build a road to space “for the benefit of Earth,” according to Blue Origin’s company overview. Smith took the CEO job as Blue Origin was scaling from a research and prototyping organization into a larger commercial space company.

During his tenure, Blue Origin operated the New Shepard suborbital system and continued developing New Glenn, a much larger orbital rocket. Smith did not personally run every program, and broad claims that he “failed” obscure the difference between company-wide results and an individual executive’s responsibility.
Why Blue Origin was under pressure
The change drew attention because Blue Origin’s growth coexisted with delays and a slower public pace than SpaceX’s. New Shepard gave Blue Origin a functioning suborbital business, but New Glenn spent years in development without matching SpaceX’s orbital launch cadence or commercial visibility. Reporting at the time linked the leadership change to pressure over execution, not to a single documented incident.

- What Blue Origin had achieved: It had built and flown the New Shepard suborbital program and expanded its organization and facilities.
- What critics focused on: The long development timeline for New Glenn and the gap between Blue Origin’s orbital progress and SpaceX’s operational launch tempo.
- Why the comparison needs care: The companies have different ownership structures, programs, launch histories and development strategies. “Behind SpaceX” is useful context only when tied to specific measures such as orbital-launch timing or cadence.
What role did Bezos play?
Bezos was Blue Origin’s founder and central owner figure, not the day-to-day CEO during Smith’s tenure. After stepping down as Amazon’s chief executive in 2021, Bezos said he intended to devote more time and energy to Blue Origin. Amazon and Blue Origin describe that relationship in their corporate materials, including Bezos’s 2021 employee message and Amazon’s leadership biography.
That position could give Bezos substantial influence through ownership, governance and senior leadership decisions. It does not, by itself, establish that he personally ordered Smith’s removal. No public source cited for the 2023 announcement verifies a Bezos-directed firing, a demand that Smith resign, or a documented personal conflict between the two men.

Fired, resigned or simply “stepped aside”?
| Question | What the public record supports |
|---|---|
| Did Smith leave Blue Origin? | Yes. He announced his departure on September 25, 2023. |
| How was the departure described? | Smith said he was “stepping aside”; news coverage described the move as a resignation. |
| Did Bezos personally fire him? | Not publicly verified in the available reporting. |
| Was a specific launch failure cited as the cause? | No specific causation was established in the reporting. |
| Who replaced him? | Dave Limp, formerly a senior Amazon executive. |
The phrase “finally got rid of” therefore belongs in the category of commentary. “Finally” implies a long-running campaign by Bezos to remove Smith; the evidence establishes a roughly six-year tenure and criticism of Blue Origin’s pace, not repeated documented attempts to force him out.

Limp came from Amazon, where he had been a senior executive overseeing consumer devices and services associated with products such as Kindle, Fire TV and Echo/Alexa. His appointment brought experience running a large product organization and coordinating complex hardware programs.

Blue Origin did not publish a detailed explanation proving that Limp was hired for one precise reason. The most defensible interpretation is that his selection signaled a desire for tighter operational execution, program delivery and organizational discipline. That is an inference from his background and the company’s circumstances, not a confirmed statement that he was hired to “fix” Blue Origin.
What changed after Smith?
Limp became the publicly identified Blue Origin CEO. In a June 30, 2026 company update, Blue Origin still identified him in that role while describing work to return New Glenn to flight after a May 28, 2026 hotfire-test anomaly: Blue Origin’s return-to-flight update. The company said the incident damaged or destroyed several launch-site components while leaving other major infrastructure intact; The Associated Press also reported on the damage and recovery effort.

Those later events show why the leadership change should not be treated as an instant turnaround. A new CEO can alter priorities and management systems, but rocket development still involves hardware risk, testing, infrastructure work and schedule uncertainty. The 2026 anomaly occurred nearly three years after Smith’s departure and cannot be used as its cause.
The clearest way to state the story
Bob Smith left Blue Origin in September 2023 after announcing that he was stepping aside, and Dave Limp replaced him. Blue Origin’s founder, Jeff Bezos, had the influence expected of an owner and founder, but the available public reporting does not prove that Bezos personally fired Smith or forced his resignation. “Jeff Bezos finally got rid of Bob Smith” is a recognizable, editorialized framing of the change—not an established description of how it happened.
