Short answer: Verizon and T-Mobile advertised the largest iPhone 16 launch credits, but they were only the best deals for customers who already had—or were willing to pay for—the required premium plans. AT&T was especially competitive for existing customers with an iPhone 12 or newer, a recent Galaxy or Pixel, or another qualifying phone. Boost Mobile stood out because its headline discount did not require a trade-in. Apple was usually the most flexible route: its direct trade-in value could be lower, but an iPhone bought directly from Apple generally offered simpler ownership and fewer carrier lock-in concerns.
These are U.S. launch-period offers from 2024. Promotions, plan names and eligibility have expired or changed, so treat the figures below as a historical comparison rather than a current 2026 quote.
Quick verdict
- Maximum advertised subsidy: Verizon or T-Mobile, depending on your qualifying plan, phone and willingness to accept 24 or 36 months of bill credits.
- Best for an existing AT&T customer: AT&T’s launch offer, particularly for a qualifying iPhone 12–15, Galaxy or Pixel.
- Best without surrendering your old phone: Boost Mobile’s Infinite Access for iPhone offer.
- Best for flexibility: Buy from Apple, compare Apple Trade In with an independent resale quote, and avoid a carrier commitment unless the math clearly favors it.
A “free” iPhone generally meant full-price financing offset by monthly promotional credits—not a phone with no upfront tax, fees or continuing service obligation.
2024 launch-offer comparison
| Provider | Maximum advertised discount | Qualifying plan | Trade-in requirement | Credit period | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Verizon | Up to $1,000; iPhone 16 Pro “on us” in the headline offer | Unlimited Ultimate; referenced launch terms listed $90/month with AutoPay before taxes and fees | Eligible Apple, Google or Samsung smartphone; Verizon promoted some damaged-device eligibility, subject to restrictions | Up to 36 months | Existing Verizon customers already paying for the qualifying plan |
| AT&T | Up to $1,000 on Pro models; up to $830 on iPhone 16 and 16 Plus; lower-value trades could receive up to $350 | Qualifying postpaid unlimited plan starting at $75.99/month before taxes and fees in the 2024 offer | At least $180 trade-in value for the maximum $1,000 Pro credit, or $130 for the maximum $830 credit; device cannot remain on an installment plan | 36 months | AT&T customers with a qualifying iPhone, Galaxy, Pixel or similar device |
| T-Mobile | Up to $1,000 on any iPhone 16 model with the top plan; up to $830 with Go5G Plus | Go5G Next for the maximum offer; Go5G Plus for the lower maximum | Eligible device in the qualifying condition | 24 months | Customers already on Go5G Next or Go5G Plus, including families adding lines |
| Boost Mobile | Up to $1,000 | Infinite Access for iPhone, announced at $65/month | No trade-in required for the headline Infinite Access offer | Plan-dependent | Buyers without a valuable trade-in who can accept Boost’s service terms |
| Apple | Device-specific Apple Trade In value; carrier promotions may also appear at checkout | Direct Apple purchase or selected carrier financing | Model, capacity and condition determine the trade-in quote | Immediate Apple credit or carrier credit, depending on the checkout path | Customers prioritizing an uncomplicated purchase and flexible ownership |
| Best Buy | Device-specific value, not a universal iPhone 16 amount | Retail purchase or an eligible carrier promotion | Condition, documentation, accessories, location and verification affect the value | Gift card or purchase credit after verification | Customers who prefer store pickup, retailer financing or a physical trade-in |
“Up to” is a promotional ceiling, not the value of every phone. Your model, storage capacity, condition, plan, line status and trade-in deadline determine the actual credit.

What “free iPhone” meant in 2024
Carriers generally financed the phone at its retail price and then applied a promotional credit each month. To receive every credit, you usually had to keep the qualifying line and plan active and in good standing for the full term.
- Leaving the carrier, changing to an ineligible plan or failing another requirement could stop future credits.
- Paying off the device early could end remaining credits under the applicable terms.
- Sales tax was commonly calculated on the pre-credit retail price.
- Activation or upgrade fees could apply. AT&T listed a $35 fee per line in its 2024 offer.
- A new line, port-in or plan upgrade could be required for a particular promotion.
T-Mobile’s archived terms described 24 monthly credits and warned that credits could stop after cancellation or early payoff (T-Mobile promotional terms). Verizon described credits over as many as 36 months and termination when eligibility ended (Verizon’s launch terms). AT&T tied its offer to a qualifying 36-month installment and unlimited plan (AT&T offer details).
Verizon: strongest headline offer for an eligible existing customer
Verizon’s launch announcement offered new and existing customers on Unlimited Ultimate an iPhone 16 Pro “on us” or up to $1,000 off the iPhone 16 lineup, delivered through credits over up to 36 months. The referenced terms required an eligible Apple, Google or Samsung smartphone; upgrade customers generally needed the existing phone active on the account for at least 60 days.
Verizon’s marketing emphasized trade-ins “in any condition,” which made it unusually attractive for a damaged phone. That phrase did not mean every handset qualified: the promotion still imposed brand, plan, timing and trade-in-program restrictions. Verizon also stated that credits ended when eligibility requirements were no longer met.

Best use: someone already paying for Unlimited Ultimate with an eligible phone. Poor use: someone moving from a cheaper plan solely to obtain a $1,000 credit. Add the higher plan cost over 36 months before deciding.

T-Mobile: compare Go5G Next with Go5G Plus
T-Mobile advertised an iPhone 16 Pro on us—or up to $1,000 off any iPhone 16 model—with an eligible trade-in on Go5G Next. Go5G Plus generally offered an iPhone 16 on us or up to $830 off any model. The launch announcement also described limited-time payments of up to $200 for each new line switched from an eligible carrier and family offers involving four iPhones and four new lines.
Credits were spread over 24 months. T-Mobile also described launch promotions that could combine an instant Apple trade-in credit with T-Mobile monthly credits, but the exact checkout path mattered. Taxes were due on the pre-credit price, and cancellation or early payoff could stop credits.
The shorter 24-month term reduces lock-in compared with a 36-month offer, but Go5G Next can cost more than a basic plan. Compare that premium for two years rather than ranking the offer by the $1,000 number alone.

AT&T: compelling for qualifying iPhone, Galaxy and Pixel owners
AT&T’s 2024 offer provided up to $1,000 off iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max, up to $830 off iPhone 16 and 16 Plus, and up to $350 for lower-value eligible trades. The maximum $1,000 credit required at least $180 in trade-in value; the maximum $830 credit required at least $130.

The offer used a qualifying 0% APR 36-month installment and a postpaid unlimited plan starting at $75.99 per month before taxes and fees. AT&T specified a 30-day window after the new installment began to submit the trade-in, and the old device could not still be on an installment plan.
Examples listed by AT&T included iPhone 12 through iPhone 15 families, Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra 5G and newer qualifying Galaxy models, Galaxy Z Fold4, Z Flip5 and Z Fold5, Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 8 families, and selected Motorola and OnePlus phones. Those were examples from the 2024 offer, not permanent eligibility rules.

Boost Mobile: the notable no-trade-in alternative
Boost Mobile announced up to $1,000 off the iPhone 16 lineup through Infinite Access for iPhone, with no trade-in required for that headline offer. Infinite Access was announced at $65 per month. Boost also described one year of free service for customers purchasing an iPhone 16 outright under the stated offer, plus an option to trade in an eligible iPhone through Apple for an additional $180–$650 in credits.
No trade-in did not mean no commitment: the monthly service plan and its device terms still applied. Compare the $65 monthly cost over the relevant period with an unlocked phone bought outright and a lower-cost plan before treating the discount as a saving.

Apple and Best Buy: flexibility and retail alternatives
Buying directly from Apple
Apple’s launch announcement said selected U.S. carriers could provide up to $1,000 toward the iPhone 16 lineup with an old-device trade-in (Apple’s launch announcement). Apple also presented carrier offers in its own storefront (Apple carrier offers).
A direct Apple Trade In quote is based on the specific device and condition and is generally simpler than waiting for carrier credits. Do not assume Apple’s regular trade-in value and a carrier’s promotional credits automatically stack; verify the exact checkout flow. An iPhone purchased directly from Apple is generally unlocked, but Apple states that a phone financed through AT&T, T-Mobile or Verizon can remain carrier-locked until paid in full (Apple purchase terms).
Using Best Buy
Best Buy lets you estimate a value, bring the phone to a participating store or ship it, and apply the verified value toward an Apple device. Online credit follows receipt and inspection; payment is generally a Best Buy gift card. Condition, documentation, accessories, eligibility and location can change the result.
Before handing over a phone, back up your data, disable Find My, factory-reset the device and keep the shipping or store receipt. Details: Best Buy Apple trade-in process.

iPhone 16
AT&T and T-Mobile advertised up to $830, while Verizon’s launch structures ranged up to $830 or $1,000 depending on plan and eligibility. Boost advertised up to $1,000 without a trade-in under Infinite Access. Apple offered the flexible, device-specific direct-trade-in route.

iPhone 16 Plus
AT&T and T-Mobile advertised up to $830. Verizon’s business materials listed up to $930 for the Plus in one offer structure, but Verizon’s consumer amount varied by plan and promotion, so do not treat $930 as universal. If the same plan produces a similar credit on the standard 16, calculate whether the Plus’s higher retail price is worth the remaining balance.
Source for Verizon’s launch materials: Verizon.
iPhone 16 Pro
AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile all advertised “free” or up to $1,000 outcomes under their highest qualifying offers. Verizon’s damaged-device language could help someone with a cracked phone, but the brand and program restrictions still applied. A premium plan can consume the apparent savings if you would otherwise pay less.
iPhone 16 Pro Max
The major carriers advertised up to $1,000, but the Pro Max cost more than the standard models. Subtract the credit from the retail price, then add plan premiums, fees and taxes; a $1,000 credit does not automatically make the Pro Max free.
Calculate the real value before switching
Use this formula:
True deal value = promotional device credit − extra plan cost − activation or upgrade fees − taxes and financing costs − forfeited existing credits.
For a carrier switch, also include any unpaid balance on your old phone, port-in costs, a required new line, lost bundle benefits and the value of hotspot, roaming or streaming features you would give up. A $1,000 credit equals about $41.67 per month over 24 months or $27.78 per month over 36 months; those are arithmetic illustrations, not separate promotions.
Should you trade in, sell privately or keep the phone?
Check at least one independent resale quote for the exact model, capacity and condition before accepting a carrier value—especially for recent Pro and Pro Max phones. Compare:
- Carrier promotional credit and the plan required to receive it.
- Apple’s immediate Trade In quote.
- Best Buy’s verified gift-card value.
- Independent resale proceeds after shipping, fees and fraud risk.
- Any remaining installment balance or credits on the old phone.
Private resale may produce more cash, but it requires your own listing, payment and shipping safeguards. A carrier trade-in is simpler but can lock you into the account for the entire credit period.
Trade-in preparation checklist
- Confirm the exact model, storage capacity and condition, including screen, body and camera damage.
- Check whether the phone powers on and whether it is still financed.
- Create an encrypted computer or iCloud backup and transfer authentication apps, eSIM details and other account access.
- Sign out of Apple ID, disable Find My iPhone, erase all content and settings, and remove a physical SIM.
- Photograph the phone and record its serial number or IMEI.
- Submit it by the stated deadline. AT&T specified 30 days; some Verizon terms specified receipt within 90 days. Deadlines were offer-specific.
- Keep the receipt, tracking number and inspection confirmation until the credit appears.
Fine print that can erase the advertised saving
- Plan changes: Moving to a cheaper ineligible plan can terminate credits.
- Early payoff: Paying the device balance early may stop future promotional credits.
- Cancellation: Leaving can make the remaining device balance due while eliminating future credits.
- Taxes: Sales tax is often based on the full pre-credit price.
- New lines and port-ins: A headline offer may be limited to new lines, switchers or specific upgrade paths.
- Condition rules: Verizon’s permissive damaged-phone language cannot be applied to AT&T or T-Mobile.
- Existing credits: Switching carriers can forfeit credits on your current phone.
- Locks: Carrier-financed devices may remain locked until paid in full, even when purchased through Apple.
Best choice by reader profile
| Your situation | Most logical starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Already on Verizon Unlimited Ultimate with an eligible phone | Verizon | You may receive the maximum credit without paying to upgrade your plan. |
| Already on T-Mobile Go5G Next or Go5G Plus | T-Mobile | The plan already matches the 2024 promotion; compare 24-month credits with your remaining balance. |
| AT&T customer with an iPhone 13 Pro, recent Galaxy or Pixel | AT&T | The device is more likely to clear the 2024 minimum-value threshold for the larger credit. |
| Android owner or iPhone owner with a heavily damaged phone | Check Verizon first, then compare alternatives | Verizon’s launch language was unusually tolerant of damage, but brand and eligibility restrictions remained. |
| No worthwhile trade-in | Boost Mobile or an outright Apple purchase | Boost advertised up to $1,000 without a trade-in; Apple avoids surrendering the phone and carrier lock-in. |
| Likely to switch carriers within a year | Apple direct purchase plus resale comparison | A 24- or 36-month credit is difficult to realize if you leave early. |
The best 2024 deal was the one whose plan, trade-in value and commitment matched your situation—not the offer with the biggest “up to” number.
