On March 4, 2024, Jeff Bezos moved ahead of Elon Musk in Bloomberg’s Billionaires Index, with estimated net worths of $200.3 billion and $197.7 billion, respectively. The reported shift followed a 7.2% fall in Tesla shares that Monday. These were dated tracker estimates—not cash balances or current net-worth figures.

What happened on March 4, 2024?

Bloomberg’s Billionaires Index ranked Bezos first and Musk second in the snapshot reported on March 4, 2024. Fortune, GeekWire and The National reported Bloomberg’s estimates as $200.3 billion for Bezos and $197.7 billion for Musk. The lead was a change from the previous ranking, when Musk had held the top spot.

News coverage attributed the change to Tesla shares falling 7.2% on March 4. Because Musk’s wealth is closely tied to Tesla shares, the drop lowered his estimated net worth enough for Bezos to move ahead in the index.

How much was Jeff Bezos worth in that ranking?

Bloomberg’s reported March 4, 2024 estimate was $200.3 billion. That figure describes the index’s valuation for that snapshot; it does not mean Bezos held that amount in cash. A billionaire ranking estimates the value of a person’s assets, less liabilities, using the tracker’s methodology.

Bloomberg describes its Billionaires Index as a daily ranking and provides calculation details on individual profiles. Its estimates can change as asset prices move, and another provider may arrive at a different estimate because rankings depend on valuation methods and how assets are treated. The reported coverage does not provide an exact intraday timestamp for the March 4 figures.

Who is the richest person in the world now?

The March 2024 ranking does not answer who is richest today: the positions can change with markets and updated asset valuations. Reporting dated October 6, 2026, citing Bloomberg’s index, said Musk was again substantially ahead of Bezos. For a present-day answer, check a live ranking and note its provider and snapshot date rather than reusing the March 2024 figures.

How to read billionaire net-worth rankings

  • Check the date. A ranking is a snapshot, not a timeless claim about wealth.
  • Check the provider. Bloomberg and other trackers may use different valuation approaches.
  • Read the profile methodology. Private assets, pledged shares and other holdings may be valued or treated differently.
  • Do not equate net worth with spendable cash. The estimate represents valued assets minus liabilities, not a bank balance.
