In a December 8, 2022 interview, Montro CEO Jasper Hauser described the platform as a marketplace connecting buyers with selected professional pre-owned watch sellers—not a watch dealer buying inventory to resell. He said Montro aimed to make online purchases more transparent through disclosed sellers, authentication and service standards, and a minimum one-year warranty. Those are Hauser’s descriptions of Montro’s model and policies at the time; they do not establish the platform’s current operation or terms.
How Hauser said Montro began
Hauser traced the idea to 2019, when the co-founders saw an opportunity to improve the experience for both buyers and sellers of pre-owned watches. The goal, as he described it, was a more modern, transparent, and trustworthy marketplace that could bring aspects of luxury retail online.
The interview identified Hauser as acting CEO, Jasper van Veghel as CTO and acting CFO, and Hessel Ruijgh as COO. Hauser also described a background in digital product design and technology entrepreneurship, including work at Facebook after selling a previous company. These are biographical details presented in the interview.
Montro’s marketplace model, as described in 2022
Hauser said Montro brought selected professional sellers together with buyers, facilitated online payments, and was developing tools to give sellers market insight and help manage their businesses and inventory. He named Adyen as the payments partner and said the arrangement supported larger online transactions as well as in-store payment solutions for sellers.

He emphasized that Montro did not intend to buy watches and resell them in competition with its sellers. In the interview, he put the distinction plainly: “We stick to our promises and we won’t compete with our sellers by becoming buyers and sellers ourselves.”
What Hauser said about seller vetting and buyer protection
Hauser said each listing disclosed the seller and that Montro worked with professional pre-owned watch specialists. He described seller qualifications as including the ability to authenticate watches, explain them to prospective buyers, and stand behind a warranty. A seller might employ a watchmaker directly or rely on a trusted watchmaker network for repairs and servicing.

He described the “Montro Guarantee” as providing at least one year of warranty for every watch, with some sellers adding a second year and some watches also covered by longer brand warranties. According to Hauser, sellers checked and authenticated watches and repaired or serviced them where necessary; buyers could return to the seller if a problem arose during at least the first year. This is the CEO’s account of the policy in 2022, not independently verified current warranty language. A buyer should confirm the written warranty, the party responsible for it, exclusions, and the process for making a claim for the specific watch being considered.
What the reported figures do—and do not—show
In the 2022 interview, Hauser reported nearly 70 sellers located internationally and more than 8,500 watches listed. He also said Montro had offered its described international payment arrangements with Adyen for Platforms since April 2022. These are dated statements from the interview, not verified present-day counts or service details.

The interview is a useful record of how Hauser presented Montro’s approach at that time. It does not establish the platform’s current status, inventory, seller roster, payment arrangements, or policies.
Hauser’s view of the pre-owned watch market
Hauser characterized some secondary-market price increases—particularly for Rolex—as a bubble followed by a correction. The interview provides no underlying dataset or method, so this should be read as his market assessment rather than a measured finding.

He also referred to a projection that more than half of the luxury watch market would be pre-owned in a few years and invoked McKinsey in discussing it. The interview does not identify the report, its date, the definition of “market,” or its forecasting method, so it does not substantiate that projection as a verified McKinsey statistic.
Collectibles and other plans mentioned in the interview
Hauser said Montro had recently announced Montro Collectibles, an initiative he described as asset-backed NFTs developed with sellers to enable co-ownership of an ultra-rare watch. The interview documents the idea as a plan announced in 2022; it does not establish that the product launched or remains available.

How to assess a pre-owned watch listing
Hauser’s account points to practical questions any buyer can ask before paying. A platform’s general promise is not a substitute for checking the individual seller, watch, and contract.
- Seller: Is the seller identified on the listing, professionally established, and reachable if there is a dispute?
- Authentication and condition: Who inspected the watch, what was checked, and are service or repair records available? Ask for clear condition details and photographs of the specific watch.
- Warranty: Who backs it, how long does it last, what does it cover, and how must a claim be made? Get the terms in writing rather than relying on a general platform description.
- Returns and issue resolution: Confirm the return window, any conditions or costs, and the route to take if the watch is not as described or develops a problem.
- Payment: Check who processes the payment and what protections apply to the transaction. Do not assume that a payment partner or marketplace name itself guarantees a particular remedy.
- Listing and provenance: Review the stated condition, included accessories, ownership or service history where provided, and any gaps or inconsistencies. Ask the seller to clarify anything material before purchase.
The interview’s central distinction is between a marketplace that connects buyers to specialist sellers and a retailer that owns and resells stock. That distinction can help a buyer understand who is making the sale, but it does not by itself verify a particular watch or guarantee a successful claim.
