This is a ranking of new passenger-car models sold in Japan during the calendar year—not a global sales list or a ranking of Japanese brands in other countries. Four of the ten models are kei cars, Japan’s small-car category.
Japan’s top 10 passenger-car models by 2025 sales
Nippon.com compiled this combined ranking from data supplied by the Japan Automobile Dealers Association (JADA) and the Japan Light Motor Vehicle and Motorcycle Association (JLMVMA). Its list includes both regular passenger cars and kei cars; the asterisk convention in the source marks kei models. Exact 2025 sales totals are available here for the top three only.

How the 2025 ranking changed from 2024
The N-Box remained first for a fourth consecutive year. The biggest changes among the listed models were Yaris moving ahead of Corolla, Spacia taking third, and Daihatsu models rising in the ranking.

Nippon.com links Daihatsu’s improvement to recovery from the previous year’s production disruption associated with a certification-testing scandal. The source does not provide a specific sales total for that explanation.
Why rankings that exclude kei cars look different
Some Japan sales tables exclude minicars, the broader category that includes kei cars. They therefore answer a different question from the combined ranking above, where N-Box and Spacia place first and third.

For example, Best-Selling-Cars.com’s 2025 table excluding minicars lists Yaris first at 166,533, Corolla second at 138,829, and Sienta third at 106,558. It also reports Raize at 100,851, Roomy at 95,221, and Freed at 90,437. Those figures belong to that source’s non-minicar table and should not be used as sales totals for ranks four through ten in the combined ranking. See its 2025 Japan model table excluding minicars.
