A Japanese-inspired food item has arrived in the United States: 7-Eleven announced a Japanese-Style Egg Salad Sandwich for participating 7-Eleven, Speedway, and Stripes stores on December 3, 2025. Seven & i has also set targets for fresh food and expanded store formats. But the company has not announced a timetable to convert U.S. stores wholesale into Japanese-style convenience stores.
What is actually coming to U.S. stores?
The confirmed product launch is a U.S. version of a sandwich inspired by the egg salad sandwich sold at 7-Eleven in Japan. The company says it uses soft milk bread and egg salad made with KEWPIE Mayonnaise. Its announcement described the item as available at participating 7-Eleven, Speedway, and Stripes stores nationwide; “participating” does not mean every location carries it, or has it in stock at all times. 7-Eleven’s December 3, 2025 announcement does not claim the U.S. sandwich is identical to Japan’s version.
Brandon Brown, Senior Vice President of Fresh Foods at 7-Eleven, Inc., said the Japanese sandwich “has long been a favorite item” in Japan and that the U.S. version was inspired by its flavor. That is a product introduction, not an announcement of a wider Japanese menu or a new store format.
What Seven & i says about its U.S. store plans
Seven & i Holdings’ September 2025 transformation overview sets out several North American goals, including investment in differentiated fresh food, more restaurant-adjacent stores, and more large-format openings. The company said it aims to approximately double its U.S. restaurant-adjacent stores over five years, increase large-format openings from 125 a year to 250 or more, and add 1,300 stores over five years. These are company targets, not completed results or proof that those stores will use Japan’s convenience-store format. Seven & i’s September 2025 transformation overview does not give a dated program to convert U.S. stores into Japanese-style locations.

In an April 2025 interview, Seven & i CEO-designate Stephen Hayes Dacus said the company did not intend to duplicate the Japanese-style “conbini” everywhere. He discussed supply-chain efficiency as a way to lower costs, while cautioning that simply making food recipes cheaper could turn customers away. His remarks point to adapting ideas and operations to local markets rather than copying one national model. The Associated Press interview was published in April 2025.
Why store-growth targets need context
The 1,300-store goal and annual large-format opening target are plans, not a count of net new conventional food-focused stores. In April 2026, the Associated Press reported that company filings forecast 645 North American closures and 205 openings for fiscal 2026; the reported closure figure includes conversions to wholesale fuel stores. That is a forecast, not a final tally, and it should not be treated as a completed outcome or as evidence of a Japanese-format rollout. Associated Press coverage of the fiscal 2026 forecast provides that operating context.

How to interpret “Japan-style”
For U.S. customers, the specific confirmed Japan-inspired offering is the egg salad sandwich. The announcement establishes the named product and its ingredients, not a complete comparison of Japanese and U.S. menus, services, or store operations. Seven & i’s broader strategy does signal a push on fresh food and certain store formats, but the company has not published a dated, location-by-location schedule for adopting a complete Japanese-style U.S. store model.
- Product: The announced sandwich is described as inspired by Japan’s version, not as identical to it.
- Food strategy: Seven & i has stated a goal of investing in differentiated fresh food.
- Store format: Restaurant-adjacent and large-format targets are distinct from a plan to replicate Japanese convenience stores wholesale.
- Availability: The sandwich was announced for participating locations; check with a local store for current stock.
- Timing: Store-format goals are targets, and no full-conversion timetable has been announced.
What customers can expect next
The evidence supports a limited, concrete takeaway: U.S. 7-Eleven customers may find a Japan-inspired egg salad sandwich at participating locations, while the parent company pursues broader fresh-food and store-format initiatives. It does not support saying that Japanese-style 7-Elevens are scheduled to replace U.S. stores nationwide. Whether the sandwich is available at a particular store depends on local participation and inventory.
