Jane Street faces two separate legal matters: a July 2025 interim action by India’s securities regulator over alleged index-derivatives trading, and a U.S. civil complaint filed in February 2026 alleging misuse of confidential information in crypto trading. Neither source establishes a final finding against the firm, and the available materials do not confirm the later status of either matter.
Why Jane Street is in the headlines
The phrase “barred in India, sued in crypto” compresses two different proceedings into one headline. India’s Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) issued an interim order concerning trading around index options expiry. Separately, a plaintiff filed a civil lawsuit in a U.S. court alleging that Jane Street used confidential information connected to Terraform in crypto trading.
The matters involve different forums, alleged conduct and procedural stages. The India order records SEBI’s preliminary view and interim directions; the U.S. complaint states a plaintiff’s allegations. Neither document, by itself, proves the contested claims.
What SEBI alleged about trading in India
In its July 3, 2025 interim order, SEBI described Jane Street Group entities taking positions in index options while also trading in index constituents and futures. SEBI alleged that the activity could move the underlying index near expiry and benefit the options positions. The regulator characterized the pattern as “extended marking the close” and prima facie manipulative.

In plain terms, the allegation concerns trading in components of an index and futures near the close of an options-expiry session, alongside options positions whose value could benefit from movement in that index. That is SEBI’s account of the trading pattern; it is not a final adjudication that Jane Street manipulated the market.
SEBI’s order reproduces this language from an NSE caution letter: “The above trading activity prima facie appears to be fraudulent and manipulative in terms of dealing in top constituents of index in cash market / futures segment and taking relatively large size contra position in options expiring on that day on the same index.” The words “prima facie” signal an initial view, not a final ruling.

How the India matter unfolded
- April 2024: SEBI says it began analyzing the activity after media reports of a legal dispute involving Jane Street’s Indian trading strategies.
- July–November 2024: SEBI asked the National Stock Exchange (NSE) to examine the activity; Jane Street submitted an explanation, and NSE provided an examination report.
- February 6, 2025: According to SEBI’s order, NSE issued a caution letter on SEBI’s instructions, advising the named entities to refrain from large cash-equivalent positions and certain trading patterns.
- May 15, 2025: SEBI says it observed further very large cash-equivalent positions after the caution.
- July 3, 2025: SEBI issued its interim order, setting interim directions while its investigation continued.
SEBI reported BANKNIFTY index-options profits of INR 560 crore — SEBI, 2025, across the three days on which it identified the “Extended Marking the Close” strategy. This is the regulator’s calculation in its interim order, not a final finding that the amount was unlawful profit.
The order also used unusually forceful language, stating: “Such egregious behaviour, in clear disregard/ defiance of the explicit advisory issued to them by NSE in February 2025, amply demonstrates that unlike the vast majority of Foreign Portfolio Investors and other market participants, JS Group is not a good faith actor that can be, or deserves to be, trusted.” That is SEBI’s characterization in its interim order, not a neutral judicial finding.

Does “barred in India” mean Jane Street is still barred?
SEBI’s July 3, 2025 order was an interim action, not a final adjudication. SEBI published follow-up updates dated July 14 and July 21, 2025, but their titles and dates alone do not establish how the restrictions later changed or whether they remain in force. The available material therefore does not confirm Jane Street’s current status in India or the final outcome of the investigation. “Barred” should not be read as proof of a permanent or currently effective ban.
What the Terraform crypto lawsuit alleges
In Synder v. Jane Street Group, Case 1:26-cv-01504, a civil complaint filed February 23, 2026, alleges that Bryce Pratt—who had interned at Terraform and later joined Jane Street—passed material non-public information to Jane Street. The plaintiff also alleges that Jane Street developed confidential communications with Terraform and used information from those relationships in crypto trading.

The complaint discusses Jane Street’s trading and investment activity in crypto, including UST and Luna, as well as the 2021 UST depeg and the Terra ecosystem’s May 2022 collapse. It alleges that UST did not recover its dollar peg after the 2022 event. These are allegations and background assertions in a complaint; they do not establish that Jane Street caused the collapse or independently prove the alleged use of confidential information.
What the complaint does—and does not—establish
- It establishes that a plaintiff filed claims against Jane Street and employees on February 23, 2026.
- It sets out allegations about confidential information, communications with Terraform and crypto trading.
- It is not a court finding that the allegations are true.
- The complaint alone does not establish whether the case was later dismissed, settled, adjudicated or remains pending.
How the two matters differ
| Question | India SEBI matter | Terraform crypto lawsuit |
|---|---|---|
| Forum | India’s securities regulator, SEBI | U.S. civil court; Synder v. Jane Street Group, Case 1:26-cv-01504 |
| Key document | SEBI interim order dated July 3, 2025 | Plaintiff’s complaint filed February 23, 2026 |
| Conduct alleged | Trading in index constituents and futures alongside index options around expiry, allegedly to affect the index and benefit options positions | Alleged misuse of confidential Terraform-related information in crypto trading |
| What is established by the cited document | The order’s allegations, interim directions and SEBI’s reported calculations—not a final adjudication of the allegations | The filing and the plaintiff’s claims—not proof of those claims or a later case outcome |
There is no basis in these documents to treat the proceedings as legally connected. They concern different alleged conduct in different jurisdictions; one is a regulator’s interim action and the other is a private civil lawsuit.

What investors and readers should take away
- SEBI’s India matter concerns alleged trading patterns around index options expiry, not the Terraform allegations.
- The INR 560 crore figure is SEBI’s reported calculation for three days associated with the pattern it identified, not a final court or regulatory determination of unlawful profit.
- The crypto case began as a complaint alleging confidential-information misuse; allegations in a complaint are not findings of liability.
- The documents described here do not establish the current status of the India restrictions or the later procedural status of the U.S. lawsuit.
