Jane Fraser became CEO of Citigroup on March 1, 2021, making her, in Citi’s description, the first woman to lead a major U.S. bank. Citi’s board announced her selection on September 10, 2020, naming her to succeed Michael Corbat.

When did Citi appoint Jane Fraser CEO?

Citi announced the board’s decision on September 10, 2020. Fraser was then Citi’s president and CEO of Global Consumer Banking. The announcement anticipated that she would take over in February 2021, but Citi’s later historical account dates her start as CEO to March 1, 2021. Citi’s September 10, 2020 announcement and its March 2021 account distinguish the selection from the effective date.

What made Fraser’s appointment historic?

Citi describes Fraser as the first woman to lead a major U.S. bank. Its 2021 proxy statement, filed with the SEC, calls her the first female CEO of a major U.S. financial institution and confirms that her promotion took effect March 1, 2021. These are Citi’s characterizations; “Wall Street bank” is a shorthand, while “major U.S. bank” is the wording used in Citi’s historical account.

On her first day as CEO, Fraser said in a statement posted on social media, as relayed by Citi: “Together, we’re charting a new course for the world’s most global bank – a bank that is systemically important to the world – a bank that is iconic – a bank that champions excellence.”

What was Fraser’s career at Citi before becoming CEO?

Fraser joined Citi in 2004 after working as a partner at McKinsey & Company. Before her appointment, she held senior roles across several parts of the bank:

  • CEO of Citi’s Latin America business
  • CEO of Citi Private Bank
  • Global Head of Strategy and M&A
  • CEO of Global Consumer Banking
  • President of Citi

At the time of the 2020 announcement, Fraser had spent 16 years at Citi. Corbat, whom she succeeded, had spent 37 years at the company, including eight as CEO, according to the same announcement. Those figures describe their tenures at that time, not their current totals.

What is Fraser’s role at Citi now?

Citi’s current leadership biography lists Fraser as both Chair of the Board and CEO, and says she was named chair in October 2025. The biography describes her multi-year strategy as an effort to transform, simplify, and modernize the bank for the digital age; that is Citi’s stated strategic aim, not an independent assessment of its results. Citi also describes its reach as serving clients in more than 180 countries and jurisdictions.
