Jane Birkin’s original Hermès Birkin prototype sold at Sotheby’s Paris on July 10, 2025, for €8.6 million, reported as about $10.1 million including fees. The winning bid itself was €7 million. The one-of-a-kind bag was made for Birkin in 1985 and later became a charity-sale item; it was not a standard production Birkin. Sotheby’s and the Associated Press report that the sale set a new auction record for a handbag.
How much did Jane Birkin’s original bag sell for?
The July 10, 2025, Sotheby’s Paris auction closed at €8.6 million, or approximately $10.1 million including fees. The hammer price—the winning bid before the auction fees—was €7 million, according to the Associated Press. That distinction matters: $10.1 million is the widely reported total, not the amount bid at the auction before fees.
The result surpassed the previous handbag auction record reported by AP: $513,040, paid in 2021 for a Hermès White Himalaya Niloticus Crocodile Diamond Retourne Kelly 28. The Birkin prototype’s result was therefore a new auction high, rather than an estimate of what an ordinary Birkin might sell for.
Why was this Birkin so different?
The bag was a one-of-a-kind prototype made for Jane Birkin and tied directly to the history of the design that later took her name. Sotheby’s describes the piece as a 1985 creation, while AP says Hermès commissioned it in 1984 and delivered it the following year. The dates refer to different stages: the commission or design began in 1984, and the bag was made for and delivered to Birkin in 1985.

The bag bears Birkin’s initials, “J.B.” She personalized it with humanitarian stickers and kept a nail clipper attached to the strap. These details belong to this particular prototype; they should not be assumed to describe later commercial Birkins.
How the Birkin origin story began
The familiar account begins on an Air France flight in 1981. In Birkin’s recollections, as recounted by Sotheby’s and AP, she met Jean-Louis Dumas, then Hermès’ artistic director, spilled her belongings and described wanting a larger, practical bag. The story is often told as the moment that led to the Birkin design, but it is best understood as an attributed account of their encounter, not as independently verified evidence of every detail of the conversation.

Sotheby’s says Hermès crafted the prototype for Birkin in 1985. Its distinct features show that it was a personal, early design object—not simply an example of a later standard model.
From Jane Birkin’s bag to an auction record
Birkin sold the prototype in 1994 to benefit Association Solidarité Sida, according to Sotheby’s. The auction house describes that sale as the beginning of her tradition of using luxury objects to support generosity. AP reports that the bag was auctioned again in 2000, then remained in private hands before its 2025 appearance.
