James Murdoch’s exact current net worth is not publicly established. Reports following the Murdoch Family Trust settlement announced on September 8, 2025, estimated that he would receive roughly $1.1 billion to $1.4 billion in settlement proceeds. Those figures are estimates of a transaction allocation—not a verified calculation of his total assets minus liabilities.

What is James Murdoch’s net worth?

No reviewed official source provides a current personal balance sheet or authoritative net-worth figure for James Murdoch. The most relevant public figures concern his expected proceeds from the 2025 Murdoch Family Trust settlement, and the estimates differ by source.

Reported figure What it refers to Source and basis
About $1.1 billion Expected proceeds for each of James Murdoch, Elisabeth Murdoch and Prudence MacLeod Reuters reported the estimate in 2025, attributing it to a source. Reuters separately reported that a public share sale raised around $1.37 billion; that sale amount is not, by itself, the full settlement consideration. Reuters
About $1.4 billion Estimated proceeds for each of the three departing beneficiaries Forbes Australia relayed Bloomberg’s estimate, based on share prices on the Monday of the settlement announcement in 2025. Forbes Australia
$3.3 billion Reported value of the settlement for the three departing beneficiaries collectively—not James’s individual wealth Forbes Australia attributed this overall settlement value to The New York Times. Forbes Australia
$24.4 billion Estimate for Rupert Murdoch and family—not James alone Forbes Australia’s family estimate as of the Monday covered by its 2025 report. Forbes Australia

The $1.1 billion and $1.4 billion estimates have different reported bases. They should not be averaged or treated as audited figures. Neither establishes how much James ultimately retained, nor accounts for all of his personal assets and liabilities.

What the Murdoch Family Trust settlement changed

Fox Corporation announced on September 8, 2025, that litigation in Nevada over the Murdoch Family Trust had ended. It said James Murdoch and the other departing beneficiaries would cease to be beneficiaries of any trust holding Fox or News Corp. shares. New trusts for those beneficiaries would receive cash consideration funded in part by the public sale of approximately 16.9 million Fox Class B shares and 14.2 million News Corp. Class B shares previously held by the trust. Fox Corporation announcement

Fox also said the departing beneficiaries would sell their “de minimis” personal holdings over the following six months, after which they would have no direct or indirect interest in Fox or News Corp. The trust for the remaining beneficiaries was to continue through 2050, with voting control over its shares resting solely with Lachlan Murdoch through his appointed managing director. What the public filings do—and do not—disclose

A News Corp. Schedule 13D filed on September 12, 2025, identifies reporting trusts established for the benefit of Prudence MacLeod, Elisabeth Murdoch, James Murdoch, their descendants and charitable organizations. It reports that the trusts sold 14,071,293 News Corp. Class B shares on September 10 for approximately $450 million. It also describes transactions involving additional News Corp. and Fox shares that resulted in LGC Holdco acquiring the shares for an aggregate purchase price of approximately $1.99 billion. SEC Schedule 13D

Those are trust-level transactions. The filing does not state James’s individual net worth or give a separately allocated payment to him. Fox’s announcement likewise describes the settlement and share sales without publishing a complete individual allocation or a personal balance sheet.

Why settlement proceeds are not net worth

Settlement proceeds are money or other consideration tied to a particular transaction. Net worth is a broader measure: total personal assets minus total liabilities. To calculate it accurately, one would need a complete, current accounting of the person’s holdings, debts and other relevant assets and obligations.

The public settlement disclosures and media estimates do not provide that accounting for James Murdoch. They support a description of reported expected settlement proceeds, but not a definitive present-day net-worth total. The figures also date from 2025 and may not reflect subsequent asset changes or market movements; the available public records reviewed here establish trust transactions and ownership changes, not his complete personal finances.
