In 2007, iWeb announced plans for a third Montreal data center: a 22,700-square-foot facility intended to add 850 cabinets and expand the company’s colocation business. It was scheduled to open in December that year, but the announcement reported a planned opening—not confirmation that it opened on schedule.

What iWeb announced in 2007

Data Center Knowledge reported on October 2, 2007, that iWeb Group Inc. planned to add a third data center in its Montreal market. The company had leased a building previously used as a data center for up to 30 years, with an option to purchase. The planned facility covered 22,700 square feet and was expected to accommodate 850 additional cabinets. iWeb scheduled it to open in December 2007. Data Center Knowledge’s 2007 report does not establish whether that schedule was met.

Why iWeb said it needed more space

iWeb framed the project as a way to grow colocation, a service in which customers house their own servers in a provider’s data center. The company said the colocation capacity of its two existing facilities was limited because they were primarily used for dedicated-server hosting.

CEO Eric Chouinard said the new facility would help diversify revenue, extend iWeb’s Montreal presence and reach a broader customer base. He described the strategy this way: “A fundamental component of our strategy is to grow the colocation segment of our business.”

The 2010 LaSalle plan was a separate project

In January 2010, iWeb announced another Montreal facility, described as its fourth data center, in the borough of LaSalle. It was not the 2007 third facility. The figures and infrastructure plans in the table below belong to the later LaSalle announcement. iWeb’s January 2010 announcement, distributed by CNW, reported:

What happened to iWeb afterward

Internap’s 2013 Form 10-K described iWeb as operating four company-controlled data centers in Montreal for hosting, cloud and colocation services. On February 7, 2023, Leaseweb said iWeb Technologies had completed its transition to Leaseweb Canada.
