Secondhand apparel is growing quickly in the United States, and used baby clothes are part of the broader resale landscape. But the headline figures measure apparel resale overall—not baby clothing specifically—so they show a favorable backdrop, not a proven baby-clothes market size or growth rate.
Is the baby clothes resale market really growing?
The broader U.S. secondhand apparel market is growing. ThredUp’s 2025 resale report, which credits GlobalData research, says it grew 14% in 2024—five times faster than the broader retail clothing market—and projects it will reach $74 billion by 2029. Those figures cover secondhand apparel overall; they are not estimates for baby clothes.
The same report says U.S. online resale grew 23% in 2024 and projects the online resale market will reach $40 billion by 2029. These are report estimates and projections, not government statistics or baby-clothing-specific measurements. ThredUp’s report announcement says GlobalData surveyed 3,034 U.S. adults and 50 top U.S. fashion retailers and brands in January and February 2025, alongside market-sizing estimates.
There is evidence that buying and selling used children’s items is an established service: Once Upon A Child says it buys and sells gently used kids’ clothing, shoes, toys, and baby gear, and has more than 400 locations in North America. That company description does not establish the size, growth rate, prices, or profitability of a separate baby-clothes resale market.

Where can you buy or sell used baby clothes?
Two common routes to investigate are local children’s resale or consignment stores and online apparel resale platforms. The right choice depends on the particular store or platform; the sources cited here do not provide measured comparisons of selection, seller payouts, or fees.

What should you check before buying secondhand baby items?
For clothing
- Check that the listing or store description matches the garment’s size and condition, and inspect seams, closures, elastic, and fabric for damage.
- Confirm the seller’s return policy and any fees or shipping costs before paying.
- Ask for clarification or additional photos if a flaw or important detail is unclear.
These are practical transaction checks, not claims that secondhand clothing is inherently safer or riskier. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s resale guidance addresses legal compliance and safety screening across consumer products; its strongest hazard warnings concern nursery furniture and durable infant products, not ordinary garments.
For nursery furniture and durable infant products
The CPSC says its laws and regulations apply to anyone selling or distributing consumer products, including thrift and consignment stores. Its guidance warns that nursery products—especially cribs and bassinets—have been associated with deaths and numerous recalls. It advises discarding broken or wobbly nursery furniture and durable infant products that are missing parts. Review the CPSC’s resale and thrift store guidance when considering these higher-risk categories.

What the market figures can—and cannot—tell families
ThredUp’s 2025 report provides evidence of momentum across U.S. secondhand apparel and online resale. It does not show whether baby garments are growing at the same rate, what used baby clothes typically sell for, how much sellers earn, or whether reselling them is profitable. For a household deciding what to do with outgrown clothes, local acceptance rules, the effort involved, and the actual offer matter more than apparel-wide projections.
