Italy’s video-game industry had 1,600 people working in it and 160 developer studios in 2020, according to the European Games Developer Federation. Those are historical figures, not a current headcount: IIDEA later reported 2,800 employees and 200 Italian game companies for 2024.
What do the 1,600 people and 160 studios figures measure?
The European Games Developer Federation’s 2020 data lists 1,600 people working in Italy’s video-game industry and 160 video-game developer studios. The figures describe the industry in 2020; they should not be presented as Italy’s current workforce or studio count. European Games Developer Federation
A different source vintage gives a closely related historical snapshot. In a 2022 presentation, the Italian Trade Agency described IIDEA’s 2021 census as finding more than 160 development studios and more than 1,600 employees. The phrasing is not identical to the European federation’s counts, and the presentation refers to 2021 rather than 2020. Italian Trade Agency
How many people and companies were reported for 2024?
In an announcement dated April 15, 2025, IIDEA reported 2,800 employees and 200 Italian game companies for 2024. Its announcement compares employment with 2,400 employees in 2022. IIDEA also estimated domestic-company turnover at €180–200 million for 2024, up 36% against 2022. IIDEA

The newer figures are useful context, but they do not establish an exact like-for-like increase in studios or companies: the earlier sources count “developer studios” or “development studios,” while IIDEA’s 2024 announcement counts “companies.” Without confirmation that the categories and counting methods match, treat them as separate measures.
Why does IIDEA give two employee-growth percentages?
IIDEA’s announcement headline describes employee growth as 17%, while its body says the rise from 2,400 employees in 2022 to 2,800 in 2024 was 19%. The raw counts imply an increase of about 16.7%, which rounds to 17%, not 19%. The counts are therefore the clearest basis for comparison; the announcement’s percentage discrepancy should not be silently resolved in favor of the body text.

IIDEA’s publication index lists a 2025 report, but the available listing does not show later industry headcounts. The 2,800-employee and 200-company figures are specifically IIDEA’s reported 2024 snapshot, announced in 2025; they should not be labeled the latest available figures without the later report’s industry data. IIDEA describes its annual report as covering market, consumer and national-industry data. IIDEA report index
