The “seller’s market” label in Successful Farming’s August 19, 2022 report describes that period, not today’s combine market. The report showed firm dealer asking prices for selected 2021 John Deere S-series machines. By September 2025, reporting described a flatter market with supply that was not being absorbed quickly enough; by June 2026, Class 8 supply had fallen from its 2024 peak, but that alone did not establish a return to 2022 conditions.
What made the 2022 market look favorable to sellers?
The August 2022 report focused on dealer listings for selected 2021 John Deere S-series combines. Its prices were asking prices—not confirmed sale prices—and the article described them as the top end of asking amounts. The reported machines had rear-wheel drive and front duals.
The figures below are a historical snapshot from that report, not current valuations. Separator hours indicate use of the harvesting mechanism; they are distinct from engine hours.

The narrowest conclusion supported by those numbers is that listed prices were firm for those selected machines at that time. The wide hours ranges show why a model name alone was not enough to explain price differences. A listing average also cannot establish what buyers ultimately paid.

How did the used combine market change afterward?
By September 2025, prices had flattened after declines
A September 2025 report described Class 8 supply as good, but demand as insufficient to absorb the available machines. Ben Freidhof, Ziegler Ag’s general manager of used equipment, said: “We had some pretty good price erosion over the past 12–18 months, but that’s flattened out.” That was his observation in 2025, not a current quote or a forecast.
The report cited 325 sales of model-year 2022–2025 Class 8 combines on TractorHouse, with an average auction price of $342,623 and a range of $163,250 to $620,250. Those are results for the cited sample, not a market-wide price guide. The high was a zero-hour Claas Lexion 8600TT in Illinois; the low was a Case IH 8250 in North Dakota with 2,236 engine hours and 1,056 separator hours. The difference illustrates why sale price must be read alongside machine condition and use.

The same 2025 report said TractorHouse had 4,085 Class 8 machines available at auction and 14,065 at dealerships across all model years as of June 2025. These listing counts describe availability, not completed sales or the value of a specific combine.
By June 2026, Class 8 inventory was below its recent peak
A June 29, 2026 Farm Equipment analysis reported Class 8 supply down 16% year over year and 37% from its August 2024 peak. That is evidence of an inventory correction; it does not by itself show that buyers again faced the same seller-favorable conditions reported in 2022, nor does it provide a current price for an individual machine.

Separate context comes from the Association of Equipment Manufacturers’ May 2026 report. Preliminary retail sales of new self-propelled combines by AEM member companies were 138 units in the United States that month, down 56.1% from May 2025. Year-to-date sales through May were 1,066, down 14.6%; beginning-May inventory was 714. These are new-equipment retail statistics, not used-combine sales or used inventory counts, so they should not be combined with auction data as if they measured the same market.
How to judge a combine’s price today
No single figure in these reports gives a current value for every make, model, and region. For a purchase, sale, or trade-in, compare machines and transaction terms on the same basis:

- Identify the machine: compare make, model, model year, class, and configuration. A broad “Class 8” label does not make unlike machines interchangeable.
- Account for use and condition: review both separator and engine hours, service records, wear, and inspection findings. Similar model years can have very different operating histories.
- Match the price basis: separate dealer asking prices from auction results and completed private sales. Record the date and location; a listing is not proof of a sale price.
- Calculate the transaction cost: compare trade-in value with a cash purchase and account for financing, transport, and repairs needed before harvest.
- Check timing and availability: compare local inventory and the auction calendar with the time you can wait. The 2025 report said August had the greatest combine sales volume in its data, followed by December and March; that pattern can help with planning but does not guarantee a lower price.
What do hours and sale channel tell you?
The September 2025 report cited Tractor Zoom data showing average prices fell by around $100,000 across each of the 500–1,000 and 1,000–1,500 separator-hour bands, and by around $60,000 in the 1,500–2,000-hour band. These were reported averages for the dataset and period—not a universal depreciation schedule. They should not be used to calculate a value by subtracting a fixed amount for every additional hour.
Sale channel matters too. A dealer asking price reflects an offer to sell; an auction result records a particular transaction under its circumstances. Neither alone tells you what a comparable machine will bring in your area. Compare several close matches, then adjust for configuration, condition, hours, location, and the costs attached to each deal.

Does the 2022 headline still apply?
Only as a description of its own time. The 2022 article documented firm asking prices for selected late-model Deere combines. Later reporting described price erosion followed by flattening and, by June 2026, a smaller Class 8 supply base than at the 2024 peak. Those developments matter to buyers and sellers, but they do not establish that the same seller’s market has returned or provide a current appraisal for a particular machine.
