Re:

IT Leaders Are Driving a New Cloud Computing Era—But the Shift Is a Reassessment, Not a Mass Exit

IT leaders are reconsidering cloud arrangements, but the available analysis does not prove a mass exit or quantify savings. Here are the options and factors to weigh.

IT leaders are reexamining whether major public-cloud services still fit their organizations’ costs, compliance needs, and workloads. That does not establish a broad retreat from cloud computing: David Linthicum’s March 14, 2025, InfoWorld analysis describes strategic pressures and alternatives, but reports no survey, adoption figures, or measured savings.

What “a new cloud computing era” means

The change Linthicum describes is a more deliberate approach to where workloads run and how cloud arrangements are managed. Rather than assume that a large public-cloud provider is the default answer, organizations can compare the benefits and drawbacks of their current setup with other options.

The analysis names Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud as major providers. It raises concerns such as unpredictable costs, data-transfer fees, tiered storage charges, compliance requirements, and long-term pricing commitments. It does not provide a cost dataset or establish that these concerns apply equally to every customer.

Linthicum summarizes the reassessment this way: “They are carefully evaluating their current cloud strategies and questioning whether the advantages of traditional cloud providers still surpass the drawbacks.” The article’s example of “Tech Innovations Inc.” is fictional; it illustrates a scenario, not reported company experience.

UGREEN NAS DH2300 2-Bay for Beginners & Personal Users, Phone Backup
  • Entry-level NAS Personal Storage:UGREEN NAS DH2300 is your first and best NAS made easy. It is designed for beginners who want a simple, private way to store videos, photos and personal files, which is intuitive for users moving from cloud storage or external drives and move away from scattered date across devices. This entry-level NAS 2-bay perfect for personal entertainment, photo storage, and easy data backup (doesn't support Docker or virtual machines).
  • Set Your Devices Free, Expand Your Digital World: This unified storage hub supports massive capacity up to 64TB.*Storage drives not included. Stop Deleting, Start Storing. You can store 22 million 3MB images, or 2 million 30MB songs, or 43K 1.5GB movies or 67 million 1MB documents! UGREEN NAS is a better way to free up storage across all your devices such as phones, computers, tablets and also does automatic backups across devices regardless of the operating system—Window, iOS, Android or macOS.
  • The Smarter Long-term Way to Store: Unlike cloud storage with recurring monthly fees, a UGREEN NAS enclosure requires only a one-time purchase for long-term use. For example, you only need to pay $459.98 for a NAS, while for cloud storage, you need to pay $719.88 per year, $2,159.64 for 3 years, $3,599.40 for 5 years. You will save $6,738.82 over 10 years with UGREEN NAS! *NAS cost based on DH2300 + 12TB HDD; cloud cost based on 12TB plan (e.g. $59.99/month).
  • Blazing Speed, Minimal Power: Equipped with a high-performance processor, 1GbE port, and 4GB RAM on Board, this NAS handles multiple tasks with ease. File transfers reach up to 125MB/s—a 1GB file takes only 8 seconds. Don't let slow clouds hold you back; they often need over 100 seconds for the same task. The difference is clear.
  • Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.

Why reassess an existing cloud arrangement?

A cloud decision should be judged against the organization’s actual requirements and results, not provider promises alone. The review is most useful when it looks at the full cost and operating impact of a workload rather than one advertised rate.

  • Total cost: Include compute, storage tiers, data transfer, support, and the work needed to operate or move the workload.
  • Productivity and integration: Consider whether the services help teams deliver and maintain systems effectively, and how well they connect to the organization’s existing tools.
  • Compliance and data location: Determine which rules apply, where data must reside, and whether a provider’s services and operating model meet those obligations.
  • Flexibility: Examine the practical consequences of long-term commitments, provider-specific dependencies, and the effort required to change course.
  • Workload fit: Different applications have different needs for performance, latency, capacity, and control. A suitable platform for one workload may be a poor fit for another.

Cloud and infrastructure options to compare

These options are alternatives to evaluate, not universal cost-saving answers. Some can also be combined; for example, a hybrid model can place different workloads in different environments.

Option Potential role Questions to compare
Major public cloud Broad infrastructure and services from AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud. What is the workload’s total cost, including transfer and storage charges? Does the service meet compliance needs, integrate with existing systems, and offer acceptable flexibility?
Managed service provider (MSP) External help operating a cloud environment; tailored, flat-rate plans may improve cost predictability. Which services are included? How are rates structured? What service levels, security responsibilities, portability provisions, and exit terms apply?
Colocation Housing organization-owned servers in a third-party facility. How do hardware control, facility and operating costs, connectivity, compliance, and staffing requirements compare?
Specialized public cloud A provider tailored to particular workloads, such as machine learning or rendering. CoreWeave is an example named in Linthicum’s analysis. Does the workload fit? Compare price, availability, portability, support, and dependence on the provider.
Regional or sovereign cloud A regional option when jurisdiction, local regulation, proximity, or support is important. Where is data handled? Does the service meet applicable requirements? Check latency, service coverage, and support.
Hybrid model A combination of on-premises resources and cloud services. Which workloads belong in each environment? Assess integration complexity, operating capacity, cost, and compliance.

The comparison criteria reflect the categories and concerns in Linthicum’s discussion; they are not a formal vendor-scoring framework or the result of comparative testing.

How to make the comparison useful

  1. Define the workload and its constraints. Record what the system does, its performance and latency needs, its data-location requirements, and the integrations it depends on.
  2. Calculate the current operating picture. Review actual bills and include storage tiers, data transfer, support, staffing, and other operating work. Do not infer savings from a provider category alone.
  3. Identify the requirements that cannot be traded away. Document relevant compliance obligations, security responsibilities, availability needs, and acceptable operational control.
  4. Compare realistic alternatives. Evaluate public cloud, an MSP, colocation, a specialized or regional provider, and hybrid placement only where each is plausible for the workload.
  5. Account for moving and leaving. Include migration effort, integration changes, portability, contractual commitments, and exit terms in the decision—not just the destination price.
  6. Choose based on the organization’s priorities. A lower or more predictable bill may matter, but it must be weighed against capability, compliance, flexibility, latency, and the team’s ability to operate the arrangement.

What the article does—and does not—establish

Linthicum’s InfoWorld piece is expert analysis, not a measured study of cloud adoption. It publishes no named statistics, survey sample, adoption percentage, or quantified savings figure. It therefore supports the conclusion that leaders have reasons to reassess cloud strategy, but not a claim that organizations broadly are leaving major providers or that any alternative will save money.
