Israel announced plans in August 2025 to add two Boeing KC-46 refueling aircraft to its fleet, bringing the planned total to six. The Ministry of Defense estimated the additional contract at approximately $500 million and said it would be funded through U.S. aid; that figure is an official estimate, not a confirmed final contract price.
What Israel announced
On 20 August 2025, Israel’s Ministry of Defense said it had instructed its procurement mission in the United States to sign a contract with the U.S. government for two additional Boeing refueling aircraft. The Israel Defense Procurement Ministerial Committee had approved the procurement. The ministry described the planes as the fifth and sixth aircraft in Israel’s new tanker fleet. Israel Ministry of Defense announcement.
The ministry put the deal’s scope at approximately half a billion U.S. dollars and said it would be funded through U.S. aid. Because the announcement described an instruction to sign, it does not establish when the contract was subsequently signed or confirm a final contract amount.
How the additional aircraft fit the six-plane program
The August 2025 announcement concerned two aircraft added to an earlier four-aircraft procurement. In September 2025, the Congressional Research Service described a 2022 contract for four KC-46As, along with maintenance, logistics, and training. Its delivery outlook reflects what was known when that report was published, not a current schedule. Congressional Research Service report.

On 27 May 2026, the Israel Defense Forces reported that the first KC-46, named Gideon, had landed at Nevatim Airbase and was the first of six refueling aircraft procured by the Ministry of Defense. Boeing also said it had delivered Israel’s first KC-46, the first of six aircraft on contract. These announcements show progress on the six-aircraft program, but do not specify when the separate contract for aircraft five and six was signed or when that pair is due to arrive. What the KC-46 is intended to add
The Ministry of Defense said the aircraft would receive Israeli systems and be adapted to Israeli Air Force operational requirements. The IDF describes refueling aircraft as extending fighter aircraft range and endurance, while also providing transport and other capabilities. Boeing describes the KC-46 as supporting aerial refueling, cargo, medical evacuation, and personnel transport. These are general platform capabilities, not confirmation of a particular mission for Israel’s aircraft.

At the 2025 announcement, Ministry Director General Maj. Gen. (Res.) Amir Baram said the additional aircraft would strengthen the air force’s long-range strategic capabilities. At the first aircraft’s arrival ceremony in May 2026, IDF reporting attributed to Israeli Air Force Commander MG Omer Tischler the description of the aircraft as adding fuel, cargo capacity, and reach. Boeing Israel President Maj. Gen. (Res.) Ido Nehushtan called the KC-46A the “world’s most advanced multi-mission aerial refueling capability”; that characterization is Boeing’s, not an independent assessment.

In March 2020, the U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency reported that the State Department had approved a possible Foreign Military Sale to Israel of up to eight KC-46 aircraft and related equipment, with an estimated value of $2.4 billion. The notice covered items including engines, communications and navigation equipment, spares, support, and training. It was notification of a possible sale and congressional review—not proof that Israel bought eight aircraft. It is a separate action and scope from Israel’s 2025 announcement about two additional planes. Defense Security Cooperation Agency notice.
