Isovalent launched on November 10, 2020, with Cilium Enterprise, a commercial cloud-native networking and security product, and announced a $29 million Series A led by Andreessen Horowitz and Google, with Cisco Investments participating. Cisco completed its acquisition of Isovalent on April 12, 2024; Isovalent is no longer an independent company.

What Isovalent announced in 2020

Isovalent’s launch paired an enterprise software offering with new financing. The $29 million figure refers specifically to the Series A announced on November 10, 2020—not to the company’s total lifetime funding. Andreessen Horowitz and Google led the round, and Cisco Investments also participated. Isovalent’s launch and funding announcement set out the company’s positioning, while TechCrunch’s contemporaneous report identified Cilium Enterprise as the commercial product.

The launch-era product was not a Linux distribution or a physical networking appliance. It was enterprise software for networking and security in cloud-native environments, built around the open-source Cilium project.

What Cilium Enterprise does

Cilium is a cloud-native networking project associated with Kubernetes environments. It uses eBPF, a Linux kernel technology, to implement networking and security functions closer to workloads. Isovalent presented the enterprise offering as helping organizations connect, observe, and secure modern applications.

NETGEAR 5-Port Gigabit Ethernet Unmanaged Network Switch (GS305)
  • GIGABIT ETHERNET PORTS: Features 5 x 1.0Gbps Ethernet ports for high-speed connectivity. Auto-negotiating ports detect the optimal speed for connected devices and work with existing Cat5e or Cat6 Ethernet cables.
  • PLUG-AND-PLAY UNMANAGED NETWORK SWITCH: Simple plug-and-play setup with no software to install or configuration required.
  • FLEXIBLE MOUNTING OPTIONS: Compact metal design supports desktop or wall-mount placement for versatile installation.
  • SILENT & ENERGY-EFFICIENT OPERATION: Fanless design ensures silent performance, while IEEE 802.3az Energy Efficient Ethernet reduces power consumption without compromising high-speed network performance.
  • REGIONAL COMPATIBILITY: Made for use in U.S. & CA only

Those are product goals and positioning, not independently verified performance results. The launch materials do not establish measured speed gains, security outcomes, or a feature-by-feature division between Cilium Enterprise and open-source Cilium.

Why the Series A mattered to the product launch

The funding announcement accompanied Isovalent’s effort to commercialize enterprise capabilities around an open-source infrastructure project. The round’s investors were Andreessen Horowitz and Google as leads, plus Cisco Investments as a participant. In the company’s announcement, Andreessen Horowitz partner and Isovalent board member Martin Casado described the ambition as moving beyond “IPs + ports” toward networking visibility and security aligned with how developers, operations teams, and security teams think about applications and data. That statement reflects an investor’s perspective, rather than an independent assessment of product results.

Isovalent’s current corporate context

Cisco announced its intent to acquire Isovalent on December 21, 2023, describing Cilium, Tetragon, Cilium Mesh, and Isovalent Enterprise as part of its cloud-native networking and security portfolio. Cisco completed the acquisition on April 12, 2024, and said Isovalent’s team joined its Security Business Group. Cisco’s acquisition announcement and completion release document the timeline.

Cisco said it would continue offering and building on Isovalent Enterprise for Cilium. Its current data-center security product page describes the offering as providing cloud-native forensics, compliance monitoring, and threat detection using eBPF and Kubernetes identity context. These are Cisco’s descriptions of its product, not independent validation of its capabilities.
